He was solid in 2010, and struggled last year. I agree. It's because Theo likes his potential. Theo doesn't just trade for pitchers that suck.

Here's the problem. The Reds have made the committment to win now. Not when the "potential" comes through. Wood would be of very little benefit to the Reds this season, barring any injury. Marshall, on the other hand, would be a huge addition and upgrade to the bullpen.

I agree Marshall would be a very nice addition to the bullpen, but I don't like the idea of trading a 24 year lefty for him. If the Reds were to sign another starting pitcher to give them more depth before making a trade it would be an easier pill to swallow. Chapman still remains a huge question mark in the rotation. Let's say he doesn't cut it as a starter, and another starter gets injured. Who is left at AAA to plug into the rotation?

Wood is far more reliable than Bailey. He's also a lefty. He has show that he can be spotty, but he has also showed that he can be relied upon. I want to keep Wood.

It would just have to be one starter if the Reds decide Chapman is best suited for the pen. I don't see why you would think their toast if Cueto, Latos, Arroyo and Leake were at the top of their game, and Bailey went down.

Well, in this world you gotta give something to get something. If the Reds want to win now, you have to make a sacrifice. The Cubs weren't going to give up a top notch LH reliever with a wicked breaking ball for a case of Big Leaguebchew and a fungo bat...

The prospects aren't going to be "prospects". They'll be minor leaguers.

Like any trade, it's just a gamble. The risks can reward you or blow up in your face. Maybe Wood turns into a reliable middle-of-the-rotation guy, or maybe he regresses and never does much. Best case scenario for the Reds is that we get a top reliever to shore up the bullpen while Wood doesn't live up to his potential. Worst case scenario (the one we are all too familiar with) is that Wood turns out to be a stud as he matures and Massett rubs off on Marshall. I think you have to ask if the best case scenario is worth risking the worst case scenario.

Minor leaguers are still prospects so of course it will be all minor leaguers. What if it's Wood, Hamilton, and Corcino you agree that you still like it? If it's Wood and some long shot guys I'm good with it but I'm not willing to deal some of our higher ranked prospects for a closer.

There's a difference between "prospects" and career minor leaguers. It will be the later. You can throw out all the ridiculous scenarios you want, if Wood is the top "asset" they're giving up, which he is, it's a great deal for the Reds.
