That would be too logical? I'd suspect another overweight, under-motivated lineman--Mikey Boy's favorite type of high pick!!

And there you have the a big piece of this hideous puzzle. The Bengals drafts have been horrible. We have already went down the list. But over the last what 8 years, they have drafted only two good palyers. Their two corners. I am becoming more disappointed with the linebackers on this team. Dhani is far and away the best one on the field. How old is he? Rey-Rey and Rivers blow! What were they in the draft> Oh yeah a 1 and a 2.

Not really. The draft results have been bad, but the Bengals picked pretty wisely at the time of the draft. They made no stupid, unusual reaches and took guys that were ranked well below where they were picked by the Bengals. They fact that some of them have fizzled or been underwhelming average speaks more to the coaching than the general management. Let's just look at their top picks of the past 3 drafts:

2010

1- Gresham was regarded by everyone as the #1 TE in the draft, a position they have needed to improve for years. He's done okay, but isn't really used the way he could/should be. Blame that on Bratkowski.

2 - Carlos Dunlap - so far a big zero, but again was not drafted out of place. He was considered a first round talent that slipped due to character issues. Before the 2009 college season began, he was actually projected as a top 5 overall pick.

3 - Jordan Shipley. Solid pick at time and has lived up to it.

2009

1 - Andre Smith. Obviously, a montrous disappointment, but he was considered by everyone as one of the top 2 or 3 OT in draft. No one questioned this pick when it was made.

2 - Ray Maualuga - He was considered a steal in the 2nd round. He's turned out to be quite average so far, but so has Rivers, and this looks to be more of a systemic coaching issue.

3 - Michael Johnson - again considered as a very good pick at the time; someone who could be a potential Jason Taylor-type rusher. Might still be.

2008

NOTE: Keep in mind that the 2008 draft was one where the Bengals were focused solely on "high character" guys and it affected some of their picking.

1 - Keith Rivers - picked exactly where he should have been. If Bengals don't pick him, he goes in next pick to NE (who took Mayo).

2 - Jerome Simpson. Considered a reach at the time and was a bad pick. Bengals could have had Desean Jackson, but other WR's Bengals are considered to have "passed" on were Limas Sweed and Devin Thomas, a couple of other big time busts. Unless they picked Jackson, a pick at WR here was going to be a bust.

3 - Pat Sims. Wretched pick.

2006 draft got us Leon Hall, considered the best corner out there at the time. #2 pick Kenny Irons could have been very meaningful had it not been for his injury.

The point is that the Bengals' draft picks, at the time they were made, were generally very solid choices. You did not see any crazy picks ala Miami's 2007 1st round pick of Ted Ginn. (ok, Sims was a bad pick in 2007). The fact that a lot of Bengals' high picks have turned out to be average/disappointments says far more about the lack of quality coaching than anything else. And even if you disagree and think every pick was dumb, this current coaching staff bares the responsibility, as they have had far, far more input into the draft than any staff in Bengals' history. Simply put, Marvin and his crew need to go.

There are only two guys on the roster that the Gals have drafted that are considered above average players. Both LBs from USC are terrible. I don't really care who the blame lies on. Fact is they couldn't pick a booger and get it right. As far as the coaching staff, this futility in the draft goes way before this current draft. The Bengals totally suck from top to bottom.

The defense has been a huge disappointment for the Bengals. They were as physical a team as I watched last season. Where did that go? They added TO, Gresham and Shipley...all good moves, IMO, but in the process, I think they lost their identity as a smash mouth football team. The recipe for success last season was pound the rock and play great defense. And, Carson Palmer was clutch last season leading them down the field for multiple game-winning drives.

I can basically agree in all that you said except about Owens. The defense is not just a dissapointmemt, it sucks.

As for your recipie for sucsess, imo you are 100% correct. I guess the brilliant coaching staff saw that was working well and decided that things needed to change, that they really didn't know how to win or just thought that was too simple. After all, that strategy has only worked for anyone that has ever used it since the beginning of football. Not time proven enough. :sssh::lol:

They don't have the line to play smash mouth, run-first football. There was a time when the Bengals could practically announce to their opponent that they were going to run the ball and get away with it. Not any more. And they just don't have an OC clever enough to keep the opponent's defense off balance enough to make up for line deficiencies. Bottom-line is that there is a TON of improvement that needs to take place with the O-line (actually, D-line as well) and it ain't gonna happen anytime soon. And Carson Palmer is the wrong type of QB to have playing behind a weak line.

Agree with most of that Coop but Dunlap has talent, he is probably our best pass rushing end right now believe it or not. I think he will turn out well if he keeps his head in it.

Rey is not good in space and he hasn't learned the feel to the game line a dominant power LB.

Rivers just isn't very physical.

Interesting comment in the Enquirer yesterday, but quite telling of the total ineptitude of this organization--The Bengals, with a loss tonight will clinch their 16th losing season out of the last 20 years.

In a league with a draft system in place designed to create all 8-8 teams, and for the last 8-10 years a dumbing down of the schedule for losing teams from the previous season; this bunch under the direction of the most incompetent owner/GM in the business, can't even go 8-8 or better 20% of the time??

The true fools in this equation are the folks who spend their hard earned money to support this bunch of thieves, who not only steal from the city/county, but the loyal fans that have supported them though 20+ years as the laughing stock of professional sports!! :puke: :deadhorse:
