There were 220 schools that played football last year ... that figure becomes 221 with the addition of Collins, and will be at 222 when South Warren begins playing a varsity schedule in 2011.

 

In 2012, the number goes back down to 221 when McCracken County consolidates (assuming they get the new school built on time) and Thomas Nelson opens.

 

Six classes is 2 too many in a state with 220 football schools. I could understand that many classes in Texas or Florida where there's many more schools, but not in Kentucky. Just don't think that number is needed. 4 would be more reasonable IMO.

One would be Grant County and Grant is closer to Conner than Campbell. At least it seems like it when I drive to the two schools.

Well, you're right... Dixie beat Trinity back in 2004. But, unless the KHSAA reverses itself, Dixie also (technically) beat Highlands back in 2004.

 

As for Dixie scheduling Highlands every year if the two schools are in different classes, I realize they have in the past (when Dixie was 4A and Highlands was 3A), but I do wonder how much longer that would continue if Dixie is no longer in Highlands' class/district. It seems that we may soon find out, if/when these changes go into effect.

 

I would hope that Dixie would always try to schedule Highlands, as long as Highlands wants to play them. I realize more often than not it can be chalked up as a victory for the Birds but for Dixie to get any better as a football program they must continue to schedule tough teams. They'll never progress as a program if they schedule powderpuffs, no matter what the class.

Would love to see Ryle put in the L'ville district. I think they think they are ready for the "Big Boys". After all, they have built a first class program with their facilities. I would think ANY realistic Ryle fan would relish this new re-alignment. Go Raiders!

One last one, just for fun. This is what it might've looked like if we had only 4 classes still, which I know virtually everyone wishes we did. I tried on the districts, but didn't put as much thought into it as the other scenarios, since those actually could happen. Some of the districts seemed much larger than I remember districts being once upon a time, leading me to wonder if there are more schools? I don't ever remember seeing 10 team districts, and that was somewhat unavoidable in this scenario.

 

 

The extremely large districts led me to the conclusion we could probably justify five classes, just not 6.

1) If what I've seen is true, McCracken is consolidating and will be large enough to be in 6A.

 

2) Nelson Co. is splitting so will drop out of 6A.

 

Given these 2009-10 enrollment numbers are accurate, they hold true over a 2yr. average, and both 1) and 2) happen...

 

* Jeff. Co. 6A will have TEN schools.

* NKy. 6A will have FIVE schools.

* WKy. 6A will have FIVE schools.

 

Those 'odd numbers' for those geog. regions (i.e., numbers non-divisible evenly by 4) will cause a some shuffling to have to happen with Jeff. Co. schools in 6A.

 

IF THE KHSAA IS TRUE TO WHAT THEY SAY MATTERS MOST AND 'GEOGRAPHY' IS THE DETERMINING FACTOR...my guess is more like this:

Dist1) Hend, McCrack, Marshall, Muhlenburg (sorry Daviess; most-eastern of the WKY 6A's)

 

Dist2) Daviess, Meade, CHardin, NHardin

 

Dist 3 (outside Watterson south and west) PRP, Butler, Male, Southern

 

Dist 4 (inside Watterson) Trinity, St. X, Manual, Seneca (not inside Watterson, but closest as the crow flies of the other outside-Watterson schools)

 

Dist 5 (outside Watterson and east) Eastern, Ballard, Oldham, Ryle (western-most of Nky schools)

 

Dist 6) Boone, Dixie, Campbell, and SK

 

Dist 7 (western Fayette and west suburbs) Same as original poster posted

 

Dist 8 (eastern Fayette and east/south suburbs) Same as original poster posted

 

HOWEVER, my guess is there will be a push to keep T and X OUT of the same district so occasionally they can play in the state finals ($$$).

It seems like it's near the end of the current football season. I remember new alignments being posted in a state championship program before. I'd say we should know something by Christmas if I had to guess. Coaches will already be planning schedules for next season by that time.

Highlands will have a lot more trouble in 4A than they have the past 4 years in 5A. They have not had to compete with Boyle County, Bell County, and Lexington Catholic during the past 4 years. Those 3 are the teams that had given them the most trouble while in 4 classes. Highlands has had exceptional teams the past few years, but the 5A playoffs have not offered them much competition. Bell County, LexCath and Boyle County will offer a much tougher road to the State Championship for the 'Birds.

Tonight (at the rules clinic) the commish mentioned the alignment should come out in October and that the enrollment numbers used would be 08-09/ 09-10 (as they have it drawn up by the AD HOC committee). Not this current year. He also said that he would listen to those who need to play up due to geographic issues, but that the 1a and 6a 32 team proposal was darn near a done deal. How will this change the landscape?
