KHSAA BOC Votes on New Plan for Classes

Featured Replies

4 year plan (not sure when it will start) that will put the smallest 32 in 1A and the biggest 32 in 6A. The remaining teams will be split evenly over the 4 remaining classes.

Teams may play up for geographical reasons.

Anyone have a current list that would identify what 32 teams would constitute 1A and the 32 teams for 6A if this were to be inacted anytime in the near future?

Where did the number 32 come from?

I would say because 32 is the minimum number for eight four team districts, which would leave the current playoff format the same.

That means Trinity would be 5A by 2 students?

They would only use number of male students for each school so Trinity would be 6A.

I think 1A would look like this:

Ballard Memorial 198

Beechwood 197

Nicholas County 191

Bishop Brossart 190

Mayfield 188

Bracken County 187

Pikeville 182

Berea 178

Lynn Camp 170

South Floyd 160

Phelps 157

Raceland 155

Dayton 151

Bethlehem 149

Fairview 148

Ludlow 148

Campbellsville 146

Kentucky Country Day 144

Hazard 143

Holy Cross (Louisville) 128

Frankfort 127

Caverna 126

Harlan 122

Bellevue 121

Paintsville 117

Pineville 106

Fulton County 103

Paris 102

Jenkins 101

Williamsburg 99

Fulton City 73

Eminence 62

By the link provided it looks like North Hardin would be the smallest 6A with 702 boys.

In NKY it looks like Dixie, Boone, Ryle, SK, and Campbell would be 6A but Conner would be 5A. Conner shows 636 boys. Dixie shows 720.

Cooper really made a dent in Conner's enrollment.

I wish they had voted to reduce the number of classes by 1 or 2.

Then by the looks of things Cov Cath would up to 6A since they have 960 male students????

496 boys would not put them in the top 32.

Basing that on 222 current teams, that means eight 4-team districts in 6A and 1A, which would guarantee each team a playoff bid. That would then mean 39.5 teams per class in 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A. That should work out to almost five teams per district, which would require teams in those classes to win at least one district game to qualify for the playoffs.

Of course with future consolidation, splitting, etc. the total number of teams in Kentucky would be subject to change.

If we use 39 or 40, the bottom of 5A would be Owensboro or Mercer at about 514 or 509 boys.

Two NKY teams, Conner and Scott, would fall into 5A. I'd guess you would see CCH and Highlands move upto 5A to form a 4-team district.
