Do we know when this new system would be in place?

4 year plan (not sure when it will start) that will put the smallest 32 in 1A and the biggest 32 in 6A. The remaining teams will be split evenly over the 4 remaining classes.

 

Teams may play up for geographical reasons.

The four-year plan starts with the 2011 season ... the current setup ends after this year.

According to the enrollment numbers as I understand them, Highlands will be in 4A for the next 4 years along with Cov. Cath. , Holmes and Cooper. Since Highlands is no longer geographically isolated, the chance of moving up to 5A is slim.

One interesting question ... what will Russellville do?

 

Going strictly by the 2009-10 enrollment figures, it appears that three schools in western Kentucky would be in Class A ... Mayfield, Fulton County and Fulton City. Ballard Memorial is on the bubble, but at the moment, Ballard is the 33rd smallest school.

 

Russellville is firmly in Class A, and would be put in the district with Mayfield, Fulton County and Fulton City. But the travel situation is pretty rough ... Mayfield, the closest of the three, is 128 miles away.

 

The same thing happened four years ago, and Russellville chose to play up to Class 3A, which means less travel and (coincidence or not) an easier district to play in.

 

If Russellville opts to play up again, that leaves Class A at 31 schools, unless Ballard is granted a waiver to play in Class A to give that district a fourth team.

 

Just another sticky situation the KHSAA finds itself in, another fun by-product of the silly decision to go with six classes.

Boy, if 4A has Highlands, CovCath, LexCath, Boyle County and Bell County, it's going to be a very competitive football class. I wonder what classes Johnson Central and Lone Oak will be placed in?

Another thing ... McCracken County is scheduled to consolidate three schools (Heath, Lone Oak and Reidland) into one for the 2012-13 school year. That would be one year into the new setup.

 

How will that affect classification? As it stands, District 1 in Class 2A would find itself losing two teams after the 2011 season.

Every school in Russellville's current district is in the heart of 3A enrollment (by 09/10 figures) with the exception of Butler County, which would have a lot of ground to make up to get back to 3A. South Warren will probably be 3A to begin, which would be an easy switch with Butler County. If that was the case, I see no way that Russellville would not play up. I think in that situation, the KHSAA would have no choice but to allow Ballard Memorial to play down. As it stands, they're a whopping one male heavier than Beechwood.

I'm still not totally on board with the decision to go with boys' enrollment over overall enrollment.

 

Monroe County's enrollment is 601, but last year Monroe had 341 boys.

 

Shelby Valley's enrollment is 587, but last year Shelby Valley had 328 boys.

 

That would seem to be just a fluke, because the numbers should be pretty close to 50-50.
