They are split now. Different classes for football. Different regions for hoops.

 

Hoops is a little different animal than this. Simon Kenton doesn't go far at all for its district in hoops, and not terribly far for the region. Their district in my scenario pairs them with Louisville. They were the one I chose to split off because of the hoops precedent, but they definitely have a much further travel than their cohorts facing them in this.

Well Campbell County is in the 10th Region in baseball/basketball so perhaps they could be placed with Scott County, George Rogers Clark, Madison Central?

 

As with Simon Kenton and the 8th region in hoops, there are 10th region hoops teams that are close to Campbell County. Mason County, the usual host, is not the halfway trip across the state that Campbell County to Madison Central would be. Also, when you look at the makeup of teams, if you ship a team from NKY down to a Lexington district, you actually have to shift a team west to the Louisville district from Lexington, which is counter productive. Better to burden one district and one team than two.

 

In the projected 6A, there are 4 teams around Owensboro, 4 teams around Elizabethtown, 10 Louisville teams plus Oldham County just outside Louisville, 5 NKY teams, 5 Lexington teams, GRC, Madison Central, and Scott County. You figure Lexington, GRC, Madison Central, and Scott County will stay together, the 4 Owensboro, 4 E-Town, and 4 NKY teams will be districts. Two all-Louisville districts, and then one with two Louisville teams, Oldham County, and the unlucky NKY team.

Here's my mockup based on the 09/10 enrollment only, which we know will be a component of the process. I have Highlands and CovCath remaining in their natural 4A enrollment, though there is a 5A NKY district they'd fit into as well. I have Russellville moving up to 3A as they do now, and move a team down into 1A to compensate, which I think the KHSAA would have to do to maintain at least 4 teams per district. The west in 4A would become a real issue in 2012 (and is not ideal now) when Lone Oak is gone, and 2A District 1 would be a team short as well. McCracken County will probably be a 6A school at that point. Nelson County is due to split the same year, so the balance in 6A will be maintained, with one team moving in, one team out. I'm sure it's not perfect, but really, nothing will be given the lack of teams in areas of certain classes. The number you see next to each team is their enrollment, which I believe I have correct this time (no doubling as I mistakenly did before). Without further ado, for your perusal and debate:

I would bet they will use the enrollment figures that you see in their chart based on giving schools time for scheduling beginning sometime this fall. If so that changes things. Fern Creek would be 6A, North Hardin would be 5A....etc. I am sure that will skew much, but wouldn't be drastic. Otherwise, nice job and good work

You are correct about the hoops district, the longest trip from SK would be Williamstown, about a 20 minute trip but when it comes to the regional, it's about a 60 mile one way trip. Now I know some teams in other parts of the state have to travel that type of distance or even more but I sure hope we wouldn't get shipped down to L'ville for football, talking about taking a hit at the ticket office.

Maybe they'll just head north and play in one of the Cincinnati leagues.

 

Seriously though, a couple of thoughts...

 

Poor Holmes just can't escape the Bluebird. I have a feeling that if Holmes were allowed to play 2A next year, it would only be a matter of time before Highlands was put down in 2A with them.

 

I wonder which alignment Dixie Heights prefers: getting hammered by Highlands every year or getting hammered by Trinity/St. X about every year?

 

Does it matter? I mean, Dixie will continue to schedule the Birds every year. However, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Dixie is 1 and 1 in the last two meetings with Trinity.

Rose Hill has abandoned the thought of starting football, that is why I didn't include them.

Not Russellville ... there are several other schools ahead of them in the line.

There were 220 schools that played football last year ... that figure becomes 221 with the addition of Collins, and will be at 222 when South Warren begins playing a varsity schedule in 2011.

 

In 2012, the number goes back down to 221 when McCracken County consolidates (assuming they get the new school built on time) and Thomas Nelson opens.

Great stuff! I think what you have here could be exactly what the KHSAA would decide on, for all classes. I've rearranged one, though. Class 3A. Here's my two cents (if it's even worth that). Thoughts?

 

3A

 

District 1

Caldwell County, Ft. Campbell, Heath, Trigg County, Union County (saying Tilghman plays up to 4A and is placed in District 1. Geographically, it would make perfect sense and enrollment, too )

 

District 2

Adair County, Edmonson County, Monroe County, South Warren (R'ville plays up, but only in 2A in either Dist. 1, 2 or 3-all are geographically suited for them)

 

District 3

Central, Elizabethtown, LaRue County, Hart County, Henry County (Three are in the same basketball region- Hart, LaRue, Etown. Hart could go Dist. 2 or 3)

 

District 4

Garrard County, Casey County, Western Hills, Wayne County, McCreary Central (All, but Western Hills are in the same basketball region.)

 

District 5

Bourbon County, Fleming County, Lewis County, Mason County, East Carter ( three of these are in the same basketball region- Bourbon, Fleming and Mason)

 

District 6

Estill County, Jackson County, Powell County, Bell County, Corbin

 

District 7

Lawrence County, Magoffin County, Morgan County, Sheldon Clark (no problems with travel)

 

District 8

Knott Co. Central, Belfry, East Ridge, Pike Central, Shelby Valley (all Pike County schools except for one, and Knott Co is knocking on Pike's front door)

 

That's a total of 38 teams (37 if you count Heath being taken into the new McCracken County here in a couple years). At the same time, the new Nelson County school could be 3A, and they'd jump in District 3, so you're back to 38 teams. Five team districts (6) and four team districts (2). Something else to chew on maybe? The only reason I mention basketball regions is to help justify the geographics for each district. I know this doesn't exactly help split the state down the middle with regards to who is in the east and west, but I-75 is the dividing line here for all teams/districts. Districts 1-4 are west of it, with 5-8 being on the east.

You may be right.

 

Does anyone know when the enrollment figures come out each year? I would assume not long after the beginning of the school year. If the 2010-11 figures came out by, say, the end of September, would this give schools ample opportunity to schedule, using the revised numbers, for the 2011 football season?
