Coach of the Year

Featured Replies

Phillip Haywood, always does a great job with the Pirates.

I think he deserves some mention for having this team back in the thick of the title chase after losing a lot of talent from back-to-back state champions.

Also, LCA's coach (name?) deserves some mention after their big win against Beechwood.

Marty Jaggers - Mercer Co.

What a complete turn around in his first year.

Just took a bunch of kids, taught them to believe, played to their strengths, and adjusted as each game developed. He believed in his players and his players believed in him.

There are alot of deserving names in this thread, however, we wouldn't trade Coach Jaggers for any of 'em.

I completely agree. He took a group of kids that was at best thought to be maybe .500 (maybe a little better) after losing some some studs off of Mercer Co.'s '04 squad, one of those players being the Class AA 2004 player of the year, Andrew McCloud. What's Jaggers come in and do?? Ties the school record of most wins (10) and leads the Scotties to their first playoff win in almost 20 years (17 i think to be exact).

He would get my vote for the Class AA Coach of the Year, and if nothing else he should get the Advocate-Messengers honor as the "Area Coach of the Year" ('area' meaning Danville, Boyle Co., Harrodsburg, Casey Co., Garrard Co, Lincoln Co., Mercer Co). There is definately a good thing brewing at the small county school on the north end of Harrodsburg, thats for sure!! :dancingpa

Mark Brown (John Hardin 11-1) 4A

In five years he has taken a program that didn't exist. Now they will be playing for the regional title against St. X. on 18 November. No matter the outcome of this game John Hardin is no longer under the radar. They have won two play off games, which the team was the underdog (PRP and Male). Brown is not only a football coach, but also mentors his staff and the kids that play for him. 11-1 might not impress most around the state, Brown deserves the credit for sticking with and believeing in kids that are not the biggest or fastest. Go Dawgs!!!!!

Coach McGlone of Russell lost 22 seniors from a 13 win season. Now he has 11 wins again going into the Regional Finals.

Runyon from Paintsville has to be given a serious look.

Haywood from Belfry. He's doing something right, different kids, same results

Wood of Morgan County. Has turned this team into a program.

Shawn Hager

Marty Jaggers. When was the last time mercer co. did anything? He has done a great job. Sam Harp would be a great choice as well. He is often times taken for granted because so much is expected of them every year. But he is the reason so much is expected. They just win. You say take away Turner last year and what do you have? A 12-1 record with another chance to make it to the carpet!

John Schlarman has done an excellent job as well.

Donnie Walker at Franklin County, but only if he shares it with his assistants ! Job well done by the entire staff.Inherited a team that was 0-10 and three yrs. later had one reg. season loss!!! Lost in playoffs to probable state champs Highlands.Got every last ounce out of the talent they had!

I don't know about anyone else, but I wasn't expecting Bell Co. (especially after the horrific start) to be in the position they are right now. Bell is peaking at the right moment, and could become dangerous if they pass the test against Rockcastle this Friday. My nod goes to Dudley Hilton.

Coach Randy Wood from Morgan County! One word "phenomenal". Enough said!

Hawood or McGLone either one would be deserving of votes. They both lost alot of talent and are back again fighting for state championship. Id give my vote to the winner of the game between the 2 great coaches. So Id give my vote to Coach Haywood haha JK.

Also if HC was to beat Trinity their Coach would deffintley have to be considered.

Another one is NCC, didnt their coach set the all time win record for state and go over 300 wins tonight? Now that is impressive.

Mike Glaser- St.X undefeated! This team returned only 3 starters on both offense and defense and played a killer schedule.(Bowling Green, Lex.Cath.,Highlands, Trinity,Manual,Male,PRP)

Absolutely. Glaser has never been given enough credit for molding his numbers into a Band of Brothers, teaching them how to be men, and loving them like a father - all the while putting together this year and last a 25-game win streak with the toughest schedule in the state, regular season and playoffs. Sounds like a Coach of the Year to me!

Bob Sphire just knocked out Cov Cath and shut Highlands out at home. It doesn't get much bigger than that!

Joey Downs - Bardstown. Took a group of seniors that started several years ago as a paltry dish and has turned them into a delectable stew. Experiemented with new defense this year and it worked. Class A is tough, Region 2 is tough, and yet here they are at 13-0.

I have to second that nomination. St. X played the toughest schedule in the state and still remain undefeated. People can remark on how the Tigers were ranked #1 all year and they just have to "reload", but the pressure is unbelievable. Just try replacing over 80% of the starters of a state championship team and remain #1 the next year.

I would also like to nominate Mark Sanders of DeSales. He took over a program that was on the verge of extinction and turned them into champions. He is not only trying to save the football program but the future of the school itself. Here's hoping he can revive that once strong Colt tradition. I still remember Joe Fed.
