Coach of the Year

Dave Eckstein of Bellevue is certainly deserving of a lot of consideration.

He gets my vote. :D

I guess the guy from Park Hills would need to be considered also.

As much as my heart is with that team, I don't think Coach R has really done enough to be considered with the others mentioned. To date they have pretty much gone according to Hoyle: beaten who they were supposed to, lost to who you thought they would, and now have Highlands on the calendar. Don't get me wrong, I think they may be set up for a nice run, but I wouldn't think he will get any votes given some of the seasons had around the state.

While I don't think he's coach of the year, Clay County's Aaron Steppe deserves some form of recognition. He completely revamped his offensive system this year to match his personel and has the Tigers in the playoffs for the 2nd straight season.

Absolutely. The Tigers were supposed to be way down this year after losing so many seniors. Coach Steppe really deserves an 'attaboy'!

Glad to see you back!! :ylsuper:
Randy Wood of Morgan County

Took over one of the worst football programs in KENTUCKY at any class. Has won 15 out of 21 football games with less numbers than teams mentioned.

Show me a team in the last 15 years with a worse record and quicker turn around. Also, continues to win games with injuries and in the last few weeks relying on a 3rd string QB.

With only a couple of weeks before last year's first scrimmage they were practicing with between 11 and 14 players and the program nearly folded...to see where this program WAS and IS now is nothing short of remarkable.

He also has changed the attitude of the players. They respect him and the game. Whether we win or lose we do so with class and our heads up.Before Coach Woods arrival the only team we beat for five years, I believe, was Betsy Lane. Now our boys truly believe they have a shot every time out. The record shows that they do.Taking a huge number with tons of talent and making them win is good. Taking little numbers with beaten kids and taking them to the playoffs back to back immediately is remarkable. He may not get it, but in Morgan County He is Footballs Coach...Man OF The Year. :thumb:

I agree. He has gone from a wishbone true option offense to the spread to fit his kids. Not all coaches are that adaptable.

I cast my vote for Wood of Morgan.

Yet the old vet Ivan McGlone is ringing up another double digit win seasom.

Coach David Hensley of Paul Laurence Dunbar, has taken a group of young men and turned them into winners!!!! After the tough year last year and the loss of some key players he has made this group competitive.

I agree he has done a good job, but my vote still goes to Randy Wood of Morgan Co. Just unbeliveable what he has done with that program.

Simpson from Henry Clay, will garnish a lot of votes.

Some to mention that stand out to me:

1. Woods, Morgan Co: simply awesome, what he has done.

2. McGlone, Russell: cupboard wasn't bare, but the wing-t keeps on going.

3. Hensley, Dunbar: completely turned the whole program around in 1 year.

4. Eckstein, Bellevue: took a team with 20+ players returning from the year before and stormed the hallways and got 50+ players out for 2005 and knocked off Beechwood, another awesome!

5. Downs, Bardstown: anybody looked at their defensive stats lately? Awesome!

6. Columbia, Clark Co: finally got it clicking in Winchester.

7. Rains, Lex. Christian: has a potential state finalist team in Lexington in only his 3rd year.

8. Harp, Danville: keeps winning, and winning, and winning.........

9. Pardue, Boyle Co: great program, adds another outstanding coach.

10. Sphire, Lex. Catholic: this team is for REAL..... Hope he finally gets his shot at the carpet.

11. Schlarman, Newport: great 1st year, with new program after leaving Campbell Co.

12. Buchanan, Mason Co: what a turn around, 1-9 in 2004, and now fighting for district runner-up in 2005.

13. Hart, Ashland: another big year for the Tomcats. Great Players Coach.

14. Schnieder, Newport Central Catholic: broke the state win record, what more can you say.

15. Last but not least, Haywood, Belfry: lose two great runningbacks and a fantastic O-line from the year before, and what does he do? Nothing except sitting 7-2 going into the final week and has another title contender down in Pond Creek.

Apologize for any spelling errors of coaches names but I thought all of these guys deserved some special mention.

Cougardad, after doing some checking Morgan actually beat 3 other teams 3 years ago. I think that season was the beginning of the turnaround. They only went 3-7, but were in most of the games and were within a score from winning 2 or 3 more in the last few minutes of those games. I think they had only won 4 or 5 games combined over the previous 4 or 5 seasons. I remember the community really getting excited over football for the 1st time in my life that season. Now we are starting to get the athletes out for football, and if we keep that going I think we can be a playoff team every year.

Coach Wood has definetely taken that momentum and built on it to the point Morgan is where it is at now. The turnaround has been remarkable. Now hopefully we make a deep run in the playoffs. Playing until Thanksgiving week or so sure would be nice!!!

Great list. Now if someone could put one together for the western part of the state.

I'd say Eckstein and Stryer are 1,2 in NKY.
