Coach of the Year

Featured Replies

I would add Coach Joey Downs of Bardstown as a Coach of the year candidate. He is undefeated and has a defense that has 6 shutouts and only allowed 34 points all year.

I saw a post about Phillip Haywood, and I really didn't think of him but he has done a great job. You wouldn't think so because Belfry is Belfry every year but he lost a dynamite TB tandem in David Jones and Doug Howard last year and he still does it. Other programs would have lost that backfield and they would have crumbled this year. Hats off to Coach Haywood, he does a heck of a job every year.

Randy Wood - Morgan County

Its already been said.

Paul Columbia of GRC. This was supposed to be a mediocre to avg. year with a lot of soph's logging many minutes. Wait 2 yrs everybody said. Well GRC is 8 and 1 and passed all expectations with bigger wins a head THIS year. Great compliment of seniors and younger players and solid coaching effort. I don't always agree with PC on his offnse play calling and substitutions but.........He has gotten the job done.

While I don't think he's coach of the year, Clay County's Aaron Steppe deserves some form of recognition. He completely revamped his offensive system this year to match his personel and has the Tigers in the playoffs for the 2nd straight season.

Not many coaches could take two completely different teams to the playoffs like he has in the last two years. Last years team was strictly an option team with very good senior leadership. This years team has only 5 seniors and attacks thru the air, playing mostly sophomores and a freshman QB.

The main thing he's done has been to creat an excitement about football. What once was considered a basketball school only, Steppe has the community abuzz about ...football. The atmosphere at the home games is great and the crowds are tremendous.

With a very young and talented team this year and a dominate middle school program, look for Coach Steppe and the Tigers to be a major player in 3A football. :thumb:

Great list. Now if someone could put one together for the western part of the state.

List is good. Replace Schlarman with Troy Styer!

I'd say Eckstein and Stryer are 1,2 in NKY.

How can I argue with those two. Both have over achieved this season. I'm glad I don't have to decided. :D

This really should be called STAFF OF THE YEAR. Anyone who has ever been around high school football knows that one man can not do it all. All the great programs have great staffs. St. X has over 15 staff members (I think) I think that all the assistant coaches should get credit for all the extra time they spend away from their families for at the most 15 Games per year. Alot of Head Coaches do not call offense and defense but instead worry about managing the game (clock management, player subsitutions, etc.) Many of these asst.'s spend most of their weekends game planning for the following week.

I'd say Eckstein and Stryer are 1,2 in NKY.

No love for Coach Warner over at Ryle. Three years ago Ryle was no where near where the are now. He and his staff have done a tremendous job of continuing to push each year (which also is a tribute to the kids for excepting a challenge) having known Coach for a while his kids have really taken on his attitude when it comes to this game.

Both coaches mentioned above have done terrific jobs this season. Great job Troy and Dave...but i feel one more NKY Coach should be there as well.

Complaints for why not? Curious....

After the Camels recent history and being looked at as maybe the worst program in NKY 4A. Troy comes in two weeks before practice starts and takes over a team nobody wanted, and throws together a coaching staff in less than a week. If they win Friday they are in the playoffs! How many of you gave the Camels a chance of winning. Hands down at least NKY coach of the year. Imagine what he might do with a full off season.

Don't Forget the continuation of success at Franklin County. They are 8-1 so far, from an 0-10 season 3 short years ago.

Eckstein at Bellvue has my vote, Got Ryle going, turned around Carrol, Now bellevue.

I don't think that you can justify this one unless your a homer. They haven't won anything yet, let's talk about this one in a few weeks. If Ryle is still around then maybe I'll start to buy it.

Mike Glaser- St.X undefeated! This team returned only 3 starters on both offense and defense and played a killer schedule.(Bowling Green, Lex.Cath.,Highlands, Trinity,Manual,Male,PRP)

St. Xavier dresses close to 100 varsity players, all juniors and seniors, every season ... it isn't like the Tigers are lacking in depth.
