Coach of the Year

Featured Replies

How can you say Sphire? He hasn't done anything but beat teams with less talent for his entire career. He has never even won a region even though he has all those D1 kids year in, year out... I'm not really slamming the guy I just don't think he is as deserving as some of the others mentioned.

I cannot believe I just read this. "He hasn't done anything but beat teams with less talent for his entire career"...WOW...

You're not slamming the guy huh?

He's taken a program that didn't exist 15 years ago and turned it into one of the top programs in the state. Find me another school that has only been around for 15 years that wins 11 games a year (year in year out). Find me another 3A program that has knocked off Male, St X, Boyle Co etc the past five years. Find me another 3A program that will even schedule the Male's, St X's, Trinity's of the world. I don't know of many 3A programs that wouldn't want a team that wins 11 games every year, puts multiple kids into college, builds a program into a powerhouse every year and so on and so fourth. You're right, when they beat Male, St X and Boyle they beat teams that just weren't very good  ! I have met a lot of coaches over the years. Bob has as much class as any I have met. He also knows the game as much as any I have met. Do you know any other coaches THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL COACHES ASSCOCIATION has asked to speak? How about Michigan or Notre Dame? They all have asked him! When you are on the same ticket to speak with Lavelle Edwards, Bob Stoops etc come talk to me  You're right, the guy can't coach a lick! This was supposed to be a down year for Lex Cath because they were going to be so small and inexperienced. The only loss they have this year is on a FG with 6 seconds left to St. X. I think that qualifies as a decent season in most eyes unless they are blind or just a plain hater.

Yep...it's that hater disease.

Must be roomates!

I think that Coach Sphire past record speaks for itself. Like HTTC said every year he has the best players in Lexington and surrounding areas mostly D1 players and I do believe this would be his first regional title. He may win the state championship this year, but if he does it should be his 5th or 6th not his 1st. I have heard his past players call his playoff losing streak "yearly choke". I also dont think that leaving your starting QB in during the second half to throw a TD to make the score 77-0 against a struggling is a class move (Bourbon Co.) maybe he was getting back at them for beating him twice in 97, while he had 7 D1 players and Bourbon had 0. I have the right to like who I want. I am glad I can amuse you. Go ROCK!

You ain't amusing anyone. Just showing your colors. I wouldn't know where to start on this comment. Those past players? They were doing the playing, not the coach. Actually, I'd like to hear more. Explain to us all how he should have won that many.

I don't know about anyone else, but I wasn't expecting Bell Co. (especially after the horrific start) to be in the position they are right now. Bell is peaking at the right moment, and could become dangerous if they pass the test against Rockcastle this Friday. My nod goes to Dudley Hilton.

Rock beat Bell; I take my vote back. If Phillip Haywood wins his third straight, he should be a lock. If you have not noticed, I am a little biased toward Mountain Coaches. Hey, the Mountain Players don't get the recognition they deserve, might as well try to get the coaches a little.

I am goin to say Haywood from Belfry...Everyone counted Belfry out and some how he still produces the team to beat...........

That is SO True. :thumb:

NO sarcasm either

I don't think many people counted Belfry "out"

The finalists for the COY award are in this mornings CJ.

Mike Settles-Bullitt East

Mark Brown-John Hardin

Paul Rains-Lexington Christian

Bob Schneider-NCC

Joey Downs-Bardstown

Glaser @ X is a terrific motivator...That is one of the major reasons that there are 100 kids on the team. They all want to play for him. Having that many kids presents problems as well...playing time, attitudes, getting all practice reps...etc...Glaser handles it and his kids love him.

Undefeated while having only 3 returning starters, playing 6 of the 8 top ranked teams in the state, in one of the most high pressured jobs in the state is an incredible accomplishment.

Now if I wasn't allowed to rah, rah for the home team...I would have to go with Brown from John Hardin. He has formed a brand new program (5 years) and led them to the playoffs in 3 of those years....He beat #2 ranked Male, almost beat # 1 X....he also had the best Defense (stats wise) in 4A.

Good points, I think that Glaser has earned it this year.

You must be a Coach Sphires followers... Maybe you should look at how good he did at Knott Co. while he was there. Actually don't do that because that might upset you. A good coach takes his players and schemes around them to beat teams with more talent than them. I honestly don't feel that he has done that because he couldn't win at Knott Co. and he only wins now when he has an overwhelming amount of talent than the other side. Now that being said, his team might win state this year. But like others have mentioned before, he should have already won a couple with as much talent as he has had in the past. (or at least a region)

I don't slam coaches but I simply said that he wasn't worthy of being mentioned with some of the other coaches on this thread. Other coaches around the state don't deal with 5-10 D1 athletes per year and still not win a state title.

All Schneider did was prove that once again he can take a more talented team and lose to Beechwood. Not exactly a COY feat.

He wouldn't even be COY in NKY much less the state.

I think Settles, Brown, and Downs are all great picks.

How about John Edge at Owensboro Catholic, he has his team in the final 4 for the 2nd straight year after losing a D1 QB and nearly all of his receiving core. He was the area coach of the year and may be the best game planner in the state. Did I mention that he is only 29 years old.
