How does Highlands, year in and year out, have a quality, competitive football program? Are there other sports that they are just as consistently as strong? What about the girls sports--are they strong as well?

 

Highlands is consistently strong in all sports. Their boys basketball is regularly one of the top 5 in N. Ky. Their boys soccer team just played in the state championship game. Their girls soccer team just played in the state championship game. Their girls basketball team may be the best in the state this year. Highlands is also ranked as one of the top 5 academic schools in Kentucky. They do it the same way Trinity and St. X do it - tradition, hard work, high standards, great community and great support from the community, great support from their administration, great academics, etc.

If X and T have such a numbers advantage and it is a real concern to you, then perhaps the first question should be, Why do they have such numbers? And if you like the answer, then the second question maybe should be, What can we do to make our school as attractive to incoming 8th-graders? Despite what many think, the vast, vast majority of kids attend T or X for reasons other than sports. The schools are too expensive to go there just for sports....parents decide to send their kids there for more substantive reasons. Sports (successful records or not) are a byproduct of the larger mission and goals of the schools......(A little off the original topic but not so off topic based on the recent posts.)

Well stated and way to put things back into perspective. Some posters yammering away - think it only has to do w/ f-ball.

I do not follow West Virginia football closely, but I do know that Wheeling Central is not a school with a large male enrollment. Parkersburg and Martinsburg are two of the dominant big schools in West Virginia and they are not private.

We do well in basketball, volleyball and soccer. Also have done well in cross country.

Exactly! And despite what was suggested in another thread, we do it (and always have) with kids from right here in Ft. Thomas. :thumb:

Flawed logic. You'll have parity in enrollment numbers, but not in percentage of participation. Hence, you'll have a short term success in creating that mythical "level playing field", but in reality, you're creating two more future dynasties.

I've never said that the four green schools wouldn't have success ... I have no doubt that they would win state titles.

 

But I also believe the parity in enrollment would allow more Manuals, Males and Ballards, etc., to break through on occasion.

Close some of under used Jefferson County schools! I am referring to those schools that are well under enrollment capacity. Or allow some schools to give up football and allow their students to play at another school. There's no rule that states all schools must offer all sports.

I do not understand how punishing success is sending a good message to our high school students across the state.

 

If the message we are trying to send to every high schooler is, "If someone else is better than you, try to find a way so that you do not have to directly compete with them", then I feel removing T and X from the rest of KY schools is appropriate. Otherwise, they should be allowed to dominate because they have followed every rule, and outdone everyone else with hard work & making their schools a better option for families.

You are underestimating UK. I guarantee that Kentucky would win half their games against T/X. I mean, they are a bowl-bound team . . .

What I really like about Trinity and St. X is the support that they get from parents, the community and alumni. That in it self is a very good reason why they are so much better than every one else and there is nothing wrong with that. Having 99% of the parents concerned about their kid's education and school life is a big plus. I wish it was the same way at Mayfield but it will never happen because there is not enough of those kind of parents at Mayfield. We have some very good parents but just not enough. The one thing that I hate the most is that some parents think that the school is a baby sitter and put education second.

I am sure it was meant as a joke. You could take the worst 11 players by position at UK/UL and they would still beat the snot out of any high school team.

It's not a proposal, just talking about a hypothetical scenario.

 

And it's a big "if" that there would be a continued dominance by the private schools ... the truth is that we don't know.

 

In my opinion, the presence and continued success of Trinity and St. Xavier helps perpetuate their dominance. I don't doubt that some players choose to attend one of the green schools primarily because of their elevated chances of winning a state title, continuing the cycle. Breaking up the monopoly isn't a bad thing.
