Trinity & St. X - What's the Point?

Featured Replies

Are you from Lexington. I believe Lexington schools have made the decision to not play X or T until forced to in the playoffs.

It's what has been done in NKY with HHS. What about Beechood, or Fort Campbell and those from the rest of the state who has a perrinial powerhouse, is this going on everywhere? I personally want to play the team to see where I stand and to let our kids know what the next level is all about.

I think you are right on with most of what you say, but Bob Beatty and Mike Glaser wouldn't win any rings at 90% of the public schools in this state. Don't ever think that the coaching at Trinity and X is that far ahead of the rest of the state. It is ahead, but not as far as you would like to believe.

Don't believe me? Look at Trinity's brilliant OC and how well he did once he stepped outside the hallowed walls of the Rocks. No slight against him, just pointing out the fact that T and X have factors and setups that make coaches look good. Again, T and X's coaches do a phenomonal job, but I think a lot of public coaches are right on par with them. It's a wee bit different out in the rest of the world.

I guarantee you Bob Beatty would win at other schools in this state. It's not only the time he demands of his staff during the season, but what they demand of their players in the off season as well. Their season really never ends. It takes a certain kind of kid that is willing to buy into this philosophy. As I have said before, Trinity doesn't always get the best athletes, they start building them from the time they pass their High School entrance exam in the Spring of their 8th grade year and can legally begin weight training. My son is a Junior and never lifted a weight before High School. He's in the weightroom and conditioning now a minimum of 5 days a week. It's been that way since the summer of his Freshman year. If you can tell me the public school programs have the same work ethic and they are still not able to compete, then there really is a problem that I can't answer.

I can't speak for 90% of all the schools out there but I do know from personal observation on game nights at Trinity that the visiting team's coaching is generally not as prepared as Trinity's staff and neither are their kids. However, I was impressed this year with Ballard's staff and players. Their coaches are top notch and as soon as they get time with their kids in their program they will be much more competitive with Trinity. I hope in the future Ballard will play at the freshman level.

Trinity & X has more money than the rest for scouting purposes. Ask the Bengals what it would be like to have the resources in the scouting department to prepare better.

I don't think any of those schools are in 6A. Why don't they win state in their respective divisions? They are competing against their peers enrollment wise, correct? Well, that's not correct as it relates to Highlands. So they have a numbers advantage but can't seem to get over the hump.
I think you can make the argument that no 5A school has the enrollment advantage over Highlands that Trinity and St. Xavier have over the rest of 6A.

Cov had limited success at his prior school. I think it would be akin to instituting a spread offense at Belfry.
I'm sympathetic to Coverdale's situation at Castle, but the question remains ... with the resources available to him there, why didn't he win? And why couldn't get people in line behind him like the Trinity people are behind that program?

You may want to check Beatty's record at his previous school.
According to the article I read, Beatty was 7-3 at Blue Springs in each of his last two years, which means he didn't win his district or get to the playoffs.

I believe everyone agrees that a larger pool helps. Since we want to be as forthright as possible, let's not forget about Tamme, Overstreet, B. Leffew and T. Leffew during Boyle's magical run. All played D-I and a few are/were in the NFL. More importantly, lets not forget about a gentleman named Chuck Smith. Boyle had great players and a great coach.
Boyle also won five consecutive state titles without a significant enrollment edge over the other teams in their class.
Ok, let me address a few misnomers here and make a point or two:

Off Season Workouts and the "Just get Better" Agreement - In South Central KY, the following teams ALL workout 4 or 5 days (depending on the school) from January 5th on that I know about: Bowling Green, Warren East, Greenwood, Allen Co. and Edmonson Co. Now we are talking about well developed lifting, running, and polymeric agility training. We are not in the dark ages outside of X and T. These kids push their limits in the mat room, weightroom, and track. They morph from a Winter Program to a Spring Program, then to a Summer Program. Believe me; X and T have not discovered something that rest of us don't know about with regards to physical training.

Trinity win because of Coaching Agreement - Has anyone noticed that nobody has addressed the facts that Trinity's Head Coach and their OC were both light years form the success they have had at Trinity when they were outside those walls? Curious...

T and X develop their kids better and only have a handful of DI-A players each year Argument - Let's take Boyle Co.'s Jeff Duggins here for a sec. Duggins was one of the spearheads of the GREATEST run in KY High School Football History. Where did he end up going? A Very small school folks. Duggins was a great HIGH SCHOOL player, but not someone who drew the attention of a lot of colleges. It is not about having great college prospects at this level. It is about how many good high school players you have. AT most schools, the pick comes from 50-70 kids. AT T and X it comes from 150-170. Is that there fault, no, but don't insinuate that the pool has nothing to do with it.

All good arguments ...
How many public schools start in early january training themselves at a ridiculous level, in order to be ready for practice, which starts in july? Not many I assume.Im not saying public schools dont work hard. I can tell you of the few coaches I know who are currently coaching at public schools, that none of them can get thier kids to go at it as hard that early in the year, as the kids at T and X do. Some play other sports, some do other activities, some have jobs etc..

That is of course, my opinion:thumb:

That is a very general and wrong statement to say. Coming from a small school most have never heard of, and not being very successful at the state level because of being in Beechwood's district, these kids go to work every Janurary four days a week for two and half hours a day in the weight room and speed drills. They work as hard as any other team in the state, and want it just as bad as any team in the state. That is a very wrong assumption to make.

To my knowledge no one 'gives out' rings. Parents buy them or schools buy them. At at least a couple of hundred a pop its not cheap. But I guess a school could secure rings for something other than state.

KHSAA gives out $2 meddalions that can be bought off any internet trophy site for state. But you better not have more than 50 players on the team...

I think the cheapest version of Trinity's ring last season was $350.00

Just so there is no confusion, my position on Trinity and St. Xavier is this: I don't doubt that coaching has something to do with Trinity's success ... they wouldn't be dominating 6A (and 4A before it) without it. But those guys are already starting from a position above the rest of 6A, based on the numbers advantage and the tradition that helps perpetuate that success.

I have one more question for the Trinity and St. Xavier people here: What percentage of the key players in the football program compete in other sports?

You can't use Highlands, Beechwood, Ft. Campbell, and others as comparisons to Trinity and St. X. They are not in their class (6A). If they were I gather to say they would be in the same boat as everyone else in that class. Could they play with them, yes, probably better than a lot of other 6A schools are doing. But in the end the result would be the same the majority of the time. This in essence is the problem if there is one. No other progams in the state are in their class. Unfortunately or fornuately, depending on how you look at it as long as the state says they are 6A, the schools in that class will have to strive to beat them. Deal with it, make another class for them, or separate as the majority of publics tried to do. The state shot down the sepration idea, it's not realistic to make a class of 2, so I guess dealing with it is the only option at this point.

I hate hearing becasue you can't beat St.X or Trinity you are not any good. There are a lot of good football teams. It is not about being the best it is about the journey or work to be the best. That is where a football team learns and grows. And you can't tell me that there aren't a lot of football teams on this journey. Football is a great game. It teaches many life lessons and this is one. I admire and respect what they have done. It sets the bar for us all. But I repeat, no one is in their class right now. And before the Highlands faithful attack, play up another class and compete against them each year like the rest of 6 A tries to do.

I have been saying this as well. Ballard, Male, Eastern, Fern Creek, Manual should all play X & T in Freshman and JV ball every year. It could only help develop talent.

Correct. It all started 40 years ago for Trinity with their first title.

If you want to play another sport other than football, wrestling, powerlifting, basketball or baseball do not have major conflicts with football. However, if you do play another sport and football is your main sport, you must also fulfill your lifting requirements each week. Not all football players play second sports but they do maintain weight lifting schedules.

First of all, who determines whether or not football is a student's "main sport?" Or is football always the main sport? ;)

Still, that doesn't answer my question, which is how many of the key football players participate in other sports.
