All Tell
Beshear may call a special session How about some state issues. Our governor who was elected on a pledge not to raise taxes says he may call a special session to do just that. IF the money is really as tight as he says they wouldn't it be incredibly stupid and shortsighted to call a special session KNOWING that the Senate will not pass any tax increases. Trinity alum
If our state continues to underfund education at all levels we will never develop the type of economy that would allow us to lower tax rates. David Williams takes the attitude that he doesn't care what happens to the state as long as he gets to run on a platform of 'WE DIDN'T RAISE YOUR TAXES". I tend to vote for the candidate rather than the party, but I will not vote for any candidate for state senate unless they pledge to vote against David Williams as senate president. All Tell
So are you OK with Beshear calling for a very expensive special session even knowing that tax increases will not get through the Senate?

SKINPIG
Not only is the cost of living going up for us working class folks, the cost of operating states/governments is going up also. If you're going to moderate, you have to do one of three things (1) Increase tax (revenue) or (2) Cut Govt. programs or (3) Cut public employees and teachers salary increases and use that money to increase pay for representatives and senators. Our bunch in Frankfort have been going with #3 for about 7 years now. The Kentucky State legislature is about as worthless as teats on a boar hog. David Williams and Jody Richards are the biggest jokes ever voted in to anything. Ky must have the most ignorant voters in the country, myself included. Fletcher's gone...What's better? acemona
Have any of you who may complain about attempting to generate new revenue even looked at how austere this budget is? It may not sound like much but when you talk about not filling the positions of over 5,000 state workers you are talking about cutting services. I am not talking about welfare recipients not getting their money, I am talking about judges, county attorneys, a hospital is being closed in Glasgow because it was condemned and the state could not find the money to replace it. I am talking about auditors who oversee county budgets to prevent waste fraud and abuse, I am talking about economic development projects and programs that will go by the way side b/c there aren't enough people to administer them. I am talking about more uncertified teachers being in the classroom because all of the certified ones are going to the surrounding states to get ADEQUATE pay. I am talking about prisoners being let out of jail early because we can't afford to house them (non-violent is not so big of a deal), but we won't have adequate probation officers to monitor there whereabouts and prevent recidivism. This is a scary spiral. Businesses don't come to Kentucky because we don't have a well educated workforce. We do not generate new revenue from businesses that don't enter our state. No new revenue means we underfund education so we continue to have a poorly educated workforce and then businesses don't come, we don't generate revenue, we don't fund education, businesses don't come . . . you get the picture. Eventually we will simply be 50th in all of the negative categories.

All Tell
I'm going to take my lead from someone in another thread and think just about myself right now. If my take home pay goes down just a little bit there's a better the average chance that I will have to sell my extravagant 50 year old 1000 square foot ranch house that I bought 3 years ago. I guess I could default on my mortgage and pray the government does do some kind of moratorium on foreclosures but that's a whole other story and I wasn't stupid enough to get an ARM. To be blunt I can't afford any more of a tax burden. We already have two presidential candidates that have said if they win they will raise taxes and now we have a governor who may spend alot of money when there is NO CHANCE anything will be accomplished. I say cut to the bone and then maybe, just maybe the backwards people of this state will allow some of our dollars to stay on this side of the river. MoreheadEagle
The I am all fine with some cuts if it's done right. In Kentucky they cut heath services, an education. That's something that I wasn't used to when I lived in Ohio. Cutting education (especially higher ed) isn't going to help anything. There are a lot of out of state students who come to KY b/c college is less expensive, but the state is doing less to entice those folks to stay. I only stayed b/c my wife got a job in the state. Had that not happened, my degree would have gone to Ohio and my wife with me.

So while you may not think that you will miss some of the state services it will eventually have an impact on you, and then they are still going to have to raise some taxes. there is not going to be a casino bill and our state will continue to lose ground to all of the surrounding states. It makes me very sad.

It makes me very sad. So I'm just supposed to be happy that I'm on such a a tight budget that I can't afford a tax hit? I'm just supposed to click my heels together and feel good about myself because my sacrifices will help "the greater good" while I pack up my possessions and give up my house? Nationwide it's considered a crisis because people got into stupid mortgages that they couldn't afford with stupid ARMs that are noew being foreclosed on. All three presidential candidates seem to favor some sort of government bailout for these shortsighted people. Well what about those of us that did it the right way? We saved money to make a down payment. We took a fixed rate mortgage at a couple of points higher because we knew that ARMs would eventually go up and become a problem. I've never been late on a mortgage payment much less missed one. When taxes go up (both state and federal) along with everything else will I then become one of the people that the government wants to bail out or will they just tell me that I have to sell my house and rent again because I can afford that while at the same time expecting me to help pay for the stupid people. No, you should not be happy, and you should not have increased taxes to bail out other people's economic stupidity.
woodsrider
You should also not have increased taxes because our idiot gov can't get his casino bill to pass. He put all of his hopes on it, ran on it, got elected on it, now he can't get it to pass so he is probably going to do what he said he wouldn't do.
