If the faces were not important would we have the different bobbleheads and the Arroyo hair nights, etc that are so succesful?

You've got it backwards. Bobbleheads are so important because we can't win enough to draw fans. If we win, we need no faces. Fans will come to see the winning product and the byproduct of that will be more hats, jerseys, cokes, beers, and hot dogs.

Paying Dunn $15 mill/yr. AND getting "pitching" while keeping payroll under control won't work for a market as small as Cincy's.

Two things MUST be present for a small market team to contend:

1. Superior minor league talent and coaching.

2. Great talent evaluation (from high school level -home and abroad- through eval. other teams' players)

Use #1 and #2 to develop from WITHIN and sign young players to long-term contracts before they bloom.

If these 2 necessities aren't present, the difference must be made up with more $$$$.

FWIW... The Reds don't have #1 or #2, and won't spend $$$$.

I agree with most of the above. Fortunately for the Reds, they're in a division that allows them the chance to compete without DRASTIC improvements. If they just improve their pitching " a bit" , especially in the pen, they're contenders.

Big Bog says he will open the checkbook this coming season. We'll see.

Phillips, will in time be an outstanding Reds player and perennial All-Star. I don't see Dunn, as willing to be a media/promotional player.

I'm glad he is staying.

I agree. Even with the part about Dunn staying. Dunn could be a very big part of a good ball club. Unfortunately most of the other parts are not in Cincinnati. If the OF is again Dunn, Jr, and Hamilton thats a problem.

C. is bad at best.

Starting pitching After Harang is mediocre. After Arroyo is putrid

Bullpen ? I'm afraid Stormy becomes afflicted with Stanton disease (old age)

As is this club struggles again.

What was that?

Wait for 2009? Yeah why not we've been waiting for almost 2 decades now, whats another couple of lost seasons?
