cshs81
But deferred money or not, it's still money in the bank. That means he IS the highest paid on the team. Correct. It just doesn't hit the Yankees financial statement this year as a payroll expense.
oneijoe
Correct. It just doesn't hit the Yankees financial statement this year as a payroll expense. Yep. This is NY's mechanism of avoiding some of the MLB "luxury tax" paid to small market teams.

h.s.sportsrbest
The issue with Phillips being the face is the fact that even the guys he goes to war with everyday aren't big fans. Remember the well publicized time he was on second at the end of an inning and no one brought his hat / glove out. Ugly. The knock on BP is while he is a great and fun loving guy when things are going his way he is a jerk when he is struggling. No even keel. I think he is viewed by the organization with cautious optimism. Hope he keeps being among the best 2B in the game and that his maturity develops to the point he isn't as caustic at the bad times. Remember also that he was (on more than one occasion) singled out by a Manager or Announcers for not hustling or running balls out. That is an issue, IMHO. All of that being said, I think he is a really nice piece to the future of this Club. He is an easy guy, as a fan, to pull for. His athleticism at 2B is a joy to watch.
