Voice of Reason
Anybody can manage when they have loads of talent. And nobody can manage if they don't have talent.
LRCW
Everywhere he goes, he wins. Four different teams to the playoffs. Two different teams to the pennant. Lost a game 7 world series. As a player, he was probably better than 90% of players who became fullt time managers. Maybe #2 behind Frank Robinson. Pete Rose, Don Mattingly, Ryne Sandberg, Matt Williams, just off the top of my head were better players. And that's not including guys like Cobb, Mathewson who managed some toward the end of their career.
PP1
@LRCW I would not consider Williams or Sandberg as fill time career managers yet. Mattingly is actually pretty comparable to Baker numbers-wise, although Baker played 19 years. I;m not saying that Baker is a HOFer but there are players in the Hall that are not too much better then he was.
bruin66
The Reds were idiots for getting rid of him, and now so are the Nationals. Be careful what you wish for when you get rid of winning coaches/managers. Sometimes the grass is not always greener . . . . .
