Athletic Trainers and AEDs

We have one and I believe she is provided by some place in NKY but that's just one. I was saying that you need a number of them to handle the sports. That doesn't even begin to address access to traibers during practice. NKY, Louisville , Lexington and a few other places in the state have access to resources. You start getting out into the state it becomes harder.

Gotcha. Even NKY schools are not fully covered in all sports activities.

For those that say it's cost prohibitive, how much is player safety worth?

For those that say their school doesn't have an AT but "Uncle Bob" took a first aid course once so he "helps out" at games and that's good enough would you send your dog to an unlicensed vet? Or how about Dr. Joe, the OB/GYN, has a kid on the team so when someone gets hurt he checks them out.

It still amazes me that people are willing to allow their kid's healthcare needs provided by non-qualified people.

The truth of the matter is that if someone else is paying - no cost is too high to insure safety; however, if the parents of the participants are writing checks to cover athletic trainers, team physicians, and AED's and other medical equipment the cost people are willing to pay to insure the safety of their own is a lot lower than you think.

NKY schools do not pay for this service. The local healthcare providers provide them at no cost. The hope/payoff is that injured athletes will use their services for recovery/surgery/etc. I would assume that's true in most areas.

St. Elizabeth has a monopoly in NKY. Where else would they go unless they wanted to cross the river to Ohio?

I'm not well-versed in the healthcare world. Are there specialists that are not associated with a hospital? If a kid has a knee injury can he go to a doctor in NKY that is not tied to St E?

Even if that's a no it's still smart business by St E. It's really easy to send your child to Cincinnati.

What does an AED cost a school to buy? $1,200? There are few things more certain to cause death than if your heart stops beating for very long. 4-6 minutes you got brain injury. 10 minutes you're flat dead and not coming back. You can wait 10 minutes for an ambulance to roll for a lot if not most injuries. If your heart ain't beating for 10 minutes you're just plain screwed.

If a school had an AED at each facility or AEDs to travel with each in-season program, what would that cost? Less than a new scoreboard; less than upgrades to the concession stand; less than new uniforms; less than a new stadium entrance; less than a new fieldhouse; less than laptops for all students; less than a lot of stuff.

At a lot of venues it's probably more likely to be an out of shape coach, stressed official, or agitated parent in the stands who keels over. Bad for them and a crappy rhing for little Johnny or susie to have to see, right? Just think about some of the large, red faced shouters you see on the coaches sideline? Can we really not get some more AEDs at schools? Come on people!

It is not just having one AED. You have to have multiple or whats the point. Our school has 4 of them in the school, plus 3 portables. Cost was around $15K when they bought them all, thats alot of money at one time.

A lot of money compared to what? That's the point, isn't it? When an AED saves an athlete's life, or a parent in the stands, or a coach or an official it's going to seem like a small price to pay. If you had to cut one long distance away game per year for 4 years to save enough to buy 4 portable AEDs, wouldn't it be worth it?
