Covington Catholic 90 Highlands 30

Featured Replies

I was there, unfortunately spent a good portion of the game in the hallway between the locker rooms.

Yeah, I was sitting near where it happened and you could clearly see the issue. Hope he is okay and the swelling has started to subside.

60 point margin with starters playing 14 minutes. 10 guys on the bench and each played played around 9 minutes with the lowest being 8 minutes.

Since some want to compare this to CCH football this is the equivalent of CCH being down 55-0 at halftime about 6 or 7 years ago. Unfathomable.

The difference though is that CCH got better - not great but certainly better and more competitive.

Plus it only takes two good ballers and some nice athletes to be competitive. This is why I can't figure out how Highlands not only gets beat by 60 but only scores 30 against subs. 5th time this year scoring either in the 20s or 30s.

I have only watched HHS play once this year. I thought they were decent - much better than this.

Defies logic.

Great point. CCH is closing the gap in football but is Highlands in basketball.

Actually he has played the entire season with a torn ligament in his left thumb that will have to be surgically fixed at some point in time this spring or summer. Luckily it will not effect him in college football unless he also punts. Hope is that he can recover enough to finish out his high school career that has already been shortened one full year. Thanks for asking and we are hoping for the best.

I'm going to comment it isn't personal . Some may agree or disagree but I've made the same comment before.

The problem most public schools have in basketball is the feeder system . Unless you have elite talent then it's about devolping talent . Most Catholic schools do it better.

Schools like CCH have 4 or 5 very good junior high teams. You figure 7 or 8 kids who play on each team , so 35 to 40 kids who played good minutes in 7th and 8th grade.

Then you look at public schools in NKY they at most have 1 or 2 junior high programs. So it takes schools like Holmes who has elite talent to win. .

Highlands most successful years in basketball since 1990 has been with a team with elite talent who are both football and basketball players. Highlands isn't good right now because Derek Smith , Jared Lorenzon and Fino aren't roaming the halls.

So what...that 7th grade group has gone 53-2 over the past 2 seasons. I'd say that is a pretty good winning %.

One thing that is always forgotten what Highlands has in middle school is the most Highlands has in high school. MOST (mine excluded) other high schools have more than one middle school feeding (bringing players) into the high school. It makes a difference, especially at a school like Highlands where football is king.

You are so right. Saw this after I posted similar.

If there are sophomores that are good, they should have been playing.

So you just dump the seniors who have given it their all for the last couple of years?

and little Draud is not there also.

It will all be fine in a few years. Highlands will get basketball only kids or dual sport kids who are primarily basketball players and they will return to a level where they will challenge for a District title. They will make a couple of Regional Tourneys and win a game in them........or they may start really challenging for a Region and playing in some of the better tourneys around the State and then if the football team falls short of a State Championship for a period of years we will have a whole new discussion of "Is Highlands basketball success hurting the Football program".

I think it is HHS closing the gap in football...

The Birds had really good basketball teams in the 90's with football players who lifted everyday for football, who started basketball late due to state championship in football. All those excuses don't work. Plain and simple they are not good at basketball. No big deal it happens.

No. But, the young guys get time. Been done before.

Those guys were special athletes that don't come along very often.

I could be wrong, but this outcome was probably more of a statement to Holmes, than it was to Highlands.

Son (Kevin) just happened to get caught in the line of fire intended for Dad (Mike).

Ummm, no…I'm pretty sure it was just that it was HHS. CCH getting it handed to them every fall in football does carry over….
