July 29, 201511 yr Luring the animal out of the park for 40 hours... Yeah he knew exactly what he was doing. May not have known that it was a famous lion but he knew what he was doing was wrong. No question.
July 29, 201511 yr I guess what I don't understand is the fact that, if the lion was on the preserve or not, if the species is on an endangered list, it is illegal to hunt it no matter where it is. Isn't it? If he saw it swimming in the middle of the ocean it would be illegal to hunt it if on the endangered list, right? If that's the case then the guy has no argument at all, no matter where the lion was. But maybe I am wrong about not being able to hunt endangered animals. But if I am then that seems very contradictory. Actually no, many of these countries have no real tax base so they auction off a very limited number of licenses to hunters where the money is (supposed) to be used to support the wildlife parks. These auctions supposedly raise serious money and (assuming it is not embelzzeled by government officials) is the only thing funding these parks.
July 29, 201511 yr I do not hunt and have never hunted. Zero interest to me. However, if this same lion had been off of the protected area and they lured him in and then shot him I'd have no issue with it. I don't care how beloved the animal was. I do not care that he was part of a pride. I do not care if they mount the head on the wall. If it's done legally then I'm cool with whatever you want to do and do not care how much they spend. No different than I don't care how much your boat costs or your country club membership. It's your money. But the guy knowingly (most likely) knew that his actions were illegal. Not sure if they can try him or not and I doubt he would be extradited. Guy probably got lucky in that regard. The lion is prey. Prey sometimes loses. My understanding is that the landowner/guide who lured the lion onto his property was not allotted a lion hunting tag for 2015. It is also my understanding that killing a radio-banded lion is illegal. They also apparently attempted (un-successfully) to destroy the radio collar on the lion once they skinned it and took its head for a trophy. I've also seen conflicting reports as to whether or not the baiting method used to lure the lion out of the protected area of the park he resided in was illegal or not. Both of the Zimbabweans - the professional hunter and the guide/landowner who were paid $50K by Robert Palmer to take him on the trophy hunt - have been arrested and released on $1000 bail. As for trophy hunting - taking an animal solely for its hide/head/etc with the intention of mounting it while not using the meat - I can say that I don't personally agree with it, but I do think that it is okay so long as the hunted animal has a sufficient population or has over-populated numbers.
July 29, 201511 yr As long as your doing for the meat than I don't really see how it is any different that killing a cow, chicken or pig. I meant I personally struggle with it. I have no problem with it whatsoever. In fact, I LOVE eating wild game such as deer.
July 29, 201511 yr Everything about this story bothers me. I hate it when people just shoot innocent animals for sport. I just cannot imagine lining up in your sights an animal and killing it just for sport...just don't get it at all. What I also find astounding is that in less than 12 hours we have had close to 50 posts about this incident, most saying how much they disagree with the hunting. In another thread about the three Planned Parenthood execs casually talking about doing later term abortions and selling the body parts for money (and doing so while drinking wine and eating salad in one instance), we have had less than half the responses of this thread in over a week. It would appear that the killing of one lion in Africa gets people more upset than our tax monies providing $500MM a year to Planned Parenthood. I really find that interesting...and disturbing...
July 29, 201511 yr Currently, the IUCN lists the entire lion species (panthera leo) as "vulnerable". There are three subspecies of the lion that are found in Zimbabwe: the West African Lion (panthera leo senegalensis), the East African Lion (panthera leo nubica) and the Congo Lion (panthera leo azandica). Per Wikipedia, "Within Africa, the West African lion population is particularly endangered." The East African Lion and the Congo Lion both are considered to maintain a "vulnerable" status, though. I'm not sure which subspecies Cecil was a member of, although I have read that there are very few East African Lions that populate Zimbabwe, which would likely make him one of the other two subspecies.

July 30, 201511 yr I meant I personally struggle with it. I have no problem with it whatsoever. In fact, I LOVE eating wild game such as deer. OK gotcha, I'm the same. I'd have to be extremely hungry to butcher an animal. But I have no problem buying meat from the grocery store.

July 30, 201511 yr I struggle with killing animals like deer and I actually eat them. I can't imagine killing such an animal just to pose for a picture. That's not even cool in any way. Can we assume no shark was harmed in the making of your avatar pic?
July 30, 201511 yr Can we assume no shark was harmed in the making of your avatar pic? Not at all...it swam away with no problems.
July 30, 201511 yr Author Luring the animal out of the park for 40 hours... Yeah he knew exactly what he was doing. May not have known that it was a famous lion but he knew what he was doing was wrong. The Lion was hunted illegally and died a slow and painful premeditated death, so that a wealthy, successful American could fulfill his bucket list. Can anyone read that statement and think it's really no big deal because it's just a lion?
