I personally don't have a problem with it and shark fishing looks like a blast. I just find some of your posts in this thread completely hypocritical considering your shark fishing thread.

There's a big difference in killing an abundant bait fish that I caught fair and square and luring a rare lion out of a protected environment and shooting it.

How is what you did with the fish any different than what this guy did? He used bait to kill a lion. You used bait to catch and kill a shark. Because the lion chose to leave the protected environment is on the lion. It's not like they darted the lion, drug it across the property line, then shot it.

1. You said in your post that you only released it because it was pregnant. So had it not been the shark would be dead so you could have a trophy and possible state record.

2. Again, the bait shark being chopped up in one of your picks wasn't so lucky. So it would be ok with you if the dentist would have chopped up a lion cub and used that to lure Cecil across the property line?

Sorry man, but you're not going to be able to compare chopping up a baitfish with chopping up a lion cub. If I would have brought my shark in, it would have been in my stomach and my freezer. I don't waste the animals I kill.

I'm starting to get a little lost on what we are upset about so ust so I understand...is it because he killed the lion or because we think the meat was wasted?

 

For the record most of the time when you kill an animal in Africa the meat goes to the local villages. I'm not saying Cecil steaks were passed around, but that is what happens most of the time.

It wasn't a baby shark. It was an adult Atlantic Sharpnose shark, which maxes out at a little over 3' in length and is considered an annoyance. They are abundant along the Atlantic coast.

 

In South Carolina, it is legal to keep one Atlantic Sharpnose shark per day with no size limit. And that's what we did.

He's not wrong. We are all over the place population-wise whereas these animals are endangered. One less human doesn't make a difference in the grand scheme of things, one less lion (when there aren't many left) is a different story.

 

 

I am not saying kill lots of people to solve the world's problems, but if it is a numbers game we have definitely moved beyond our ecological niche.

Look, either you are ok with taking game or you're not. You can't pick and choose what animals you want to get outraged over. Your posts in this thread suggest your issue is with taking a lion in general. If you are just upset because what he broke game laws to do it then I'm right there with you.

 

There are plenty of animals I couldn't shoot and plenty of methods I wouldn't use. But I will never be against them or show outrage for them. As long as you are within the law more power to you. You just have to be careful what you want stopped because eventually they will get around to stopping what you love.

 

As far what the dentist did, IF he knowingly broke the law I hope he has to answer for it someday.

When one is endangered and the other isn't that is an easy explanation.

I'm 100% fine with taking wild game. I'm not ok with killing game just to be killing.
