I believe if you aren't in for all sports you aren't in at all. Could hurt other sports from a scheduling standpoint.

 

I see. So no monetary or scheduling penalty from the NKAC for dropping out for a year and leaving the 2A teams and Ludlow and Dayton etc. with no games this year if they opt back in next year?

I can confirm that 16 players responded favorably and attended the Monday night meeting.

 

Those in attendance sought and received an extension of a few days to attempt to recruit a few more players. My feeling is that 21 bona fide players would keep us in the football business for this season. Less than that would probably result in our taking a one year hiatus, then regrouping/reorganizing and being back in 2015 as part of the classification realignment.

 

While I agree that the sustainability of our football program should have been addressed last fall, the fact is that it is June 17th and we simply do not have enough players at the moment to field a team. I feel that the NKAC conference would be being very unfair to penalize all of our school's sports program with a probation, because of our inability to field a football team. It's not as though we can call Rent-A-Kid to fill out our roster.

Agree completely with your statement and believe that if they drop the season, those that want to play should be allowed to play at another school (NCC....?).

I believe that Paul Wiggins, a former Brossart Feeder Colts head coach, is the official, unofficial head coach.

I don't feel 21 to start with will be enough. First, the majority of those will likely be Frosh or Sophs or inexperienced. Second, 21 has a way of turning into 17 or 18 once the practice in 90 degree heat starts. Third, 17 or 18 turns into 14 or 15 real quick when games start and players have to go both ways and get injured. Fourth, those 14 or so are likely to try and play with dings and soreness when they should not be. It is just not a good idea.

That said I don't agree with any kind of probation or sanction for not fielding a team. Haven't other NKAC schools not been able to field a soccer team or a tennis team or a golf team when they had in the previous year?

Yea, it's the best you can do at this time of year and having the mess that is known as Brossart football.

Brossart will try to play their schedule with 20 players right now. Good luck with that. Hope they did not field a team to avoid any NKAC sanctions. I'm going to speculate this will be a decision they may regret by the time they get to the 2A portion of the schedule.

It seems to me that Brossart has been struggling for a number of years now to get the football program on solid footing. I just have to ask, why try anymore? Isn't it obvious that the interest just isn't there to have a competitive football program? Isn't the competition from Campbell County just too much to overcome?

 

As an aside, this situation is EXACTLY why St. Henry won't go the football route, IMO. I know folks have asked about it before but we can see the real living proof as to why it is just too hard to fund, support, and staff something like this at schools that are entrenched in other sports.

I believe St. Henry is at least 2 times the size of Brossart. St. Henry would have no problem fielding a competitive football team. They would be more competitive than Holy Cross and Holy Cross has won a state championship. The reason St. Henry doesn't have football is the principal. St. Henry will never have football as long as Otte is Principal.

Disagree re: St Henry. The football playing kids who go to CCH coming from Boone Co on south would all go there IMO. The Southern and Western most Catholic school would draw from all those kids.

Think its short sided of the St Henry administration especially as it has been offered up on a silver platter by interested boosters and parents in the past.

When you say "offered up on a silver platter by interested boosters and parents", what does that mean?

 

Does it mean they were willing to kick in the money to jumpstart the program with equipment?

Does it mean they had a set of qualified coaches ready to volunteer their time to help offset startup costs?

Or, Does it mean they were sick of hearing about St. Henry not having a football team from their Covington Catholic neighbors?

 

Would love to hear more.

Interesting perspective. So it's one man holding up the whole thing?

 

Isn't there a school board? What about the alumni? And the Bishop?

 

I mean, if it was such an overwhelming slam-dunk of an idea, surely others would band together and make it happen, couldn't they? Or could they?

 

Why do you think the principal is so against it?
