At the last realignment four years ago, Brossart was reclassified from 1A to 2A by the KHSAA, based on rolling two-year enrollment figures. However, at the time of the reclassification, the actual enrollment numbers had dipped back to 1A levels (and future enrollment projections indicated they would remain at that level). Both Principal Dick Stewart and Athletics Director Mel Webster traveled to Frankfort to plead the case to remain in the 1A classification, but the KHSAA rejected the case.

 

Everyone at the time the decision was finalized predicted the eventual spiral that the football program would experience. They've done their best to keep noses above water, but it was inevitable. I agree with Mustang .. if they can survive this year, I believe the future will be competitive and sustainable.

You can't seriously believe that anyone was going to use projected enrollment especially in regards to a private school which really has less indication of future enrollment than a public school. There were no hard, set, fast rules as to how many teams were assigned to each division. The KHSAA came up with the number 32 for 1a and 6a. The other classes vary in number. We knew that being placed in 2A, while never ever playing a single game as a bona fide 2a school would compromise our chances at survival.

 

Our program was/is still in its infancy. Our argument was that our 2A program was going to be made up of 20/25 kids, and would be suited for 1A, not 2A. Our track record in 1A district competition showed just a handful (small handful) of wins at that level. Perhaps the KHSAA need take a look at how many kids comprise a school's football program and not their overall enrollment, especially a school that fields a full-fledged soccer program.

 

Walton-Verona is a very unfair comparison. They did it right. Started in the Junior High ranks, built their program and built thier facility. The move to 2A actully benefitted them, because of the softer competition there than what they faced in 1A. Meanwhile, we were simply trying to survive, but the KHSAA ruled in Black and White terms, that we were to compete in 2A. Again, there was no set number established or written that requires 32 schools to comprise 1A. The KHSAA arrived at that particular number and wouldn't bend, much at our expense.

Lee Teegarden resigned because he felt that he was a detriment to the numbers situation at Brossart. In other words, there were kids walking the halls that simply didn't want to play for him. He basically gave himself up in an effort to save the program, and to get more kids to come out and participate.

The 32 in 1A and 32 in 6A was in response to the KHSAA member schools saying the numbers difference between the largest and smallest schools in those classes when there was an equal number of teams in each class was making it difficult for the smallest members to compete. So once that was decided it is kind of hard to go back and say .....well lets make 1A have 33 teams because Brossart did not do what Walton Verona did. Now there are rules where teams can request to move up and the smallest teams left can move down. Some schools may like that and some may not but every school knows the rules.

After discussing the subject of Brossart football with Athletic Director Adam Franzen, here is our present staus.

 

Brossart will play a full schedule of ten games including the 2a part of the schedule. The kids, their parents, and our fans know what they are getting in to.

 

We presently have 20 players who have committed to playing this season.

Paul Wiggins will preferably remain the head coach of our Junior High Colts.

 

Applications are presently being accepted for our head coaching position. The job should be posted on the KHSAA website. Potential applicants may contact Adam Franzen at [email protected] . Adam will conduct interviews and a head coach should be named by July 10/11th. Plenty of assist personel are available. Paul Wiggins has volunteered to serve a one year term if needed, but wishes to remain in the junior high ranks. IF we would take Paul up on his offer, every effort would be made to have a head coach in place at the end of the 2014 football season.

 

Why anyone would want to be the head coach of the Brossart Football Mustangs? Next year we will be realigned to 1A in a district with Nicholas County, Bracken County, Paris and Berea. We feel that we can build a program that has the potential to play that district schedule competitively along with six independent opponents giving our players a chance to be competitive, perhaps sport a winning record (if not right away, down the road), winning a few post-season games and experiencing success playing high school football at Brossart High School. We feel that we might be attractive to those attending area schools who are passionate about playing the game, but fijnd themselves down the dept chart at those schools and would like to be a contributing member of successful football program.

 

The Gilbert Ridge property will be available for practice starting July 16th and a commitment has been made to develop that property into a football/soccer/track practice facility with storage facilities and perhaps temporary style stands.

 

Nobody said this season is going to come easy, but I am happy for those dedicated kids within our program who are dedicated to playing football, and would have been deprived of that opportunity had the program been shut down. We think that it will serve as a bridge to the future, and that brighter days are ahead for Mustangs football.

I'm not saying that you are not correct. Hindsight being 20/20 Brossart should have taken the Walton-V path, however, Brossart did not start football to help bolster enrollment, we hoped sincerely that increased enrollment would be a by-product of offering football.

 

As StickerMann stated we were pushed into football, at an ill-timed juncture, for the benefit of a single party who was committed to Brossart but wanted to play football. The survey etc., was all smoke and mirrors. We had hoped that even though our athlete base wasn't the strongest in our history that football would catch on and become a sustainable offering. The 2A issue seems to be the straw that broke the Mustangs' back. Had we known that we would be faced with playing our biggest rival for players and three other bona fide football entities in such a short period of time, perhaps we would have taken a more conservative approach to building our program.

Our number presently is 20. Previously only about 6/7 were attending workout sessions.

Was Teegarden also the coach when Pendleton County had a down turn in players and went the independent scheduling route?

 

Same happened at Ryle during his tenure. Rubbed alot of kids the wrong way..Not all his fault at Ryle though. There was a litany of other issues. But he contributed to the downfall in turnout.
