I know nothing about the coach who just resigned but if he quit after one year because he couldn't attract students to play football then I consider he to be a bad hire. Was Teegarden also the coach when Pendleton County had a down turn in players and went the independent scheduling route?

 

Down turn in players happened on his watch, which led (partially) to the independent schedule. That move, however happened under current coach Terry Brown.

Our number presently is 20. Previously only about 6/7 were attending workout sessions.

 

 

How does the 20 breakdown per class? How many seniors, juniors,...etc.

Same happened at Ryle during his tenure. Rubbed alot of kids the wrong way..Not all his fault at Ryle though. There was a litany of other issues. But he contributed to the downfall in turnout.

I'm sorry but neither of these situations can be blamed on Lee. Lee believes in hard work and accountability two things most teenagers resist feverishly. Neither of these schools had any kind of football tradition and no idea what it takes to win. I'm not talking about the schools per se but more so the kids and parents. Pendelton county did have low numbers under Lee but they also had their best season ever under Lee and won 7 games. Do you win football games by taking it easy on kids, letting them be out of shape and unaccountable so that you can have 40 or 50 kids on your team? Ask Terry Brown about it. Brossart went to Pendleton County this past season with 17 healthy kids who had worked their tails off and were in great shape against a roster of 40 something kids who hadn't and won. Football isn't easy and when kids quit because it's hard what is the coach supposed to do? Sacrafice his principals to get numbers and have your brains beat in or do what every successful program does and work hard, be in shape and disciplined? Kids at places like Highlands put in that work and even do extra because the program has a foundation and expectations, kids at places that lack that foundation and expectations say it's too hard and quit. I can tell you first hand that the kids at Brossart last season didn't put in half of the time or work that kids at Highlands do, heck Lee didn't even asked them to do what we had done work wise in our highschool program. Lee did nothing at Brossart to make kids not want to play that any other coach at successful programs do. I really hope that Brossart turns it around and has success with football and I really hope that those 7 or 8 kids that busted their tails all winter get to have a season. If Paul Wiggins is the guy to bridge the gap I wish him nothing but the best of luck as he is a great guy that comes from a great family but the axe grinders need to find blame elsewhere. At a place like Highlands that is tradition rich and 100 kids plus you need to be tough on them because talent and competition will make them better. However, if you are trying to build a program and get kids to come out and play, the hard core style isn't going to build it, it will have the opposite effect. Football is a demanding sport and a lot of kids don't want to pay the price to become good football players because of the phyiscal and mental committment it takes. I don't think Brossart is in the position to talk about winning state championships, they need to build up numbers and get the school to rally around them. I am not saying that Teegarden is not a good coach, I am sure he is a very good coach, but he was the wrong type of coaching style at a program trying to survive.

Not judging the guy. I don't have all the facts, just stating the one's I know, or have seen. Good intentions, bad style.

There were no hard, set, fast rules as to how many teams were assigned to each division. The KHSAA came up with the number 32 for 1a and 6a. The other classes vary in number. We knew that being placed in 2A, while never ever playing a single game as a bona fide 2a school would compromise our chances at survival.

 

Our program was/is still in its infancy. Our argument was that our 2A program was going to be made up of 20/25 kids, and would be suited for 1A, not 2A. Our track record in 1A district competition showed just a handful (small handful) of wins at that level. Perhaps the KHSAA need take a look at how many kids comprise a school's football program and not their overall enrollment, especially a school that fields a full-fledged soccer program.

 

Walton-Verona is a very unfair comparison. They did it right. Started in the Junior High ranks, built their program and built thier facility. The move to 2A actully benefitted them, because of the softer competition there than what they faced in 1A. Meanwhile, we were simply trying to survive, but the KHSAA ruled in Black and White terms, that we were to compete in 2A. Again, there was no set number established or written that requires 32 schools to comprise 1A. The KHSAA arrived at that particular number and wouldn't bend, much at our expense.

 

I still find the "Woe is me" mentality at Brossart disheartening. "KHSAA forced us to 2A , If we were in 1A things would have been fine." When is the last time Brossart beat Dayton, or Ludlow? I noticed Bellevue was not on the schedule after the move to 2A.

 

I agree a reboot in the softer 1A could save the program. Nothing is for sure with a school and program who seemingly have made horrible decisions across the board; from coach hires, facilities or lack thereof, and scheduling. Good luck to the young men involved.

When my son played at Brossart we were at PC playing and the PC coaches wife was setting near me not sure who coach was at time (but she was young). She said the older kids at PC didn't want to play FB because it was to much time to put in they were into farming and making money.

That is a tough argument to refute, especially for those saving for college.
