Some thoughts on Danville teams. 1984 Admirals. 13-0. Playing up in AAA. 1992, 1993 Ads. First one was unbeaten and won AA. 93 was maybe better beating AAA runner up and AAAA Runnerup before being upset by 1 in OT semifinal loss.

Both teams had a lot of Division 1 players.

Didn't get to watch it but could someone please explain all the Hit batsmen to me? Were there really that many on the plate, or was it the pitching staff choice?

A lot will depend upon the line replacements for Boyle on offense and defense. Lost some key players there.

Denny got Joe Hall to loosen up. That alone is worth the Nobel Prize IMO.

Has anyone mentioned Sam Ball of Henderson County High School? Drafted first round in 1966 with the 15th pick by Baltimore. NFL Champion in 1968 with the Colts and Super Bowl V Champion.

In 1978 I think Steve was a Senior at Corbin. The hounds lost to Middlesboro in the District and didn't make the playoffs that year.

Steve Bird of Corbin. 1976 State Champion and 1977 State Runnerup. 1979 and 1982 NCAA National Champions at Eastern and 1980, 81 National Runners up.

Particularly odd to start that late when there are very few teams from that time zone that have played for a title in the last couple of decades.

2 Kentucky kids. But Robey was from New Orleans, Phillips and Claytor from Ohio, Shidler from IL and Macy from Indiana.

Marcus Camby wasn't on the '92 team that went to the Sweet 16. Rose wasn't on the earlier Memphis team that went to the Elite 8 back to back years. I'm not apologist for Cal but it's not like his whole resume is about recruiting alone.

I'm fairly certain that the Dores beat the Cats twice in 1989. They ended Eddie Sutton's career in the SEC and that team was so bad it must have lost at lease one other time to VAndy.

They handled Danville in Regionals in that Newport quagmire that year as well.

1974 Harrodsburg. (I think) Lost to Heath in the Class A semi-finals. Bo Yeast in the backfield. Enough said. '76 and '77 teams were also capable losing only 1 regular season game in the 2 seasons. Lost each time in the Regional Finals to Frankfort.

For Somerset, I would add the '82 team with Stephens, Neikirk and Sexton. They beat Corbin handily but lost to Boyle by 1 and had to stay home from the playoffs. I believe if they would have won they would have taken AA that year.

I was going to mention that Danville squad in 1993. They lost that heartbreaker to Prestonsburg and on the other 9 times Danville would have won in a 10 game series. Those Ads beat the 4A Runnerup by 14 I believe and the AAA Runnerup in a rout. In that run from '91-'94, most will tell you that '93 was the best team.

Thiero was lost in this game. They took the ball away from him a couple of times and he fumbled it around a few more. I like Thiero but this game he must have cost the Cats about 6 points in his limited minutes.

I would say they have trouble getting opponents willing to play them because losing hurts "THEIR" RPI. Teams on the fringes of the state that are powerful, I.e. Mayfield, Belfry, Johnson Central seem to have trouble finding any opponents, let alone quality ones, that will challenge them to a game. Therefore, some have to go out of state.

I'm pretty sure Coach Pardue was a WR wasn't he? ☺️

Looking back, people forget how big a liability Ulis and Booker were on defense vs that Wisconsin team. If anything that might have played differently was to switch the 2 out for offense and defense for a few minutes whenever possible. Still, there are sometimes when "that game" ends the great season of a great team. See: 1975 Indiana, 1991 UNLV for historical examples.
