2023 Kentucky High School Football vs. Everybody Else

Featured Replies

I've meant to do this for several years but usually I've forgotten about it or something along that line.

How many out-of-state games will there be with Kentucky high school football programs this year? How do we usually fair in out-of-state games? How do we usually stack up against other specific states?

I figured it would make for an interesting thread to track the games this fall and see how we do. Any other out-of-state games you know of? (I'll edit/add to the list below as additional games get mentioned.)

Kentucky has (70) games against out of state opponents.

Currently Kentucky high schools are showing opponents from (6) other states, and it breaks down as follows:

Kentucky vs. California
- One game.

Kentucky vs. Indiana
- Fifteen games.

Kentucky vs. Ohio
- Twenty-Five games.

Kentucky vs. Tennessee
- Twenty-One games.

Kentucky vs. Virginia
- Three games.

Kentucky vs. West Virginia
- Five games.

Heard of a rumor of a central Ky team playing a California team. In another state. Crazy if true.

Why would say a Mayfield play out of state when you don't get any points for RPI and it might cost you a home game in the playoff's?

It counts in RPI and opponent is treated like they are .500 record. If team is better than .500 then not getting credit for the strength of that team.

I would say they have trouble getting opponents willing to play them because losing hurts "THEIR" RPI.  Teams on the fringes of the state that are powerful, I.e. Mayfield, Belfry, Johnson Central seem to have trouble finding any opponents, let alone quality ones, that will challenge them to a game.  Therefore, some have to go out of state.

Rossview (TN) is a Class 6A program from Clarksville. They played in our Region (District in KY) the past two seasons and have struggled. In our six-team Region they failed to make the playoffs (four teams) both years. I know Logan County is a much smaller school but should easily compete with the Hawks. The other TN teams are from East Tennessee, so I have zero knowledge of those programs.

Colonel:  Jo Byrns is a very solid Class A program from Robertson County. Ezell-Harding is a small private school from Nashville that appears to be struggling with enrollment numbers. I think they even dropped down to 8-man football for a short time period.

I love getting the insight on these Tennessee programs. Admittedly there are very few teams in the Volunteer State that I have much insight on.

Sept 8th Hopkinsville HS hosts Clarksville HS (TN) renewing an old rivalry.

We played in the same Class 6A Region as Clarksville last season (we’re dropping to Class 5A this season). Clarksville lost their main offensive player but should still be very competitive.

With regards to Clarksville, a new Montgomery County high school (Kirkwood) will open in August 2023 and will play a Class 6A varsity schedule their first year of existence. Kirkwood will pull a large portion of their enrollment from Clarksville High and two more high schools. Clarksville High may actually have a small to medium Class 5A enrollment but their School Board voted to have all Montgomery County school play in the same Class 6A Region (with the exception of one small county HS). As a side note, Kenwood HS is a Class 4A enrollment school that has struggled and now they will have to "play up" in a Class 6A Region along with all the other Montgomery Co. programs.
