Does Highlands need a coaching change?
Bluebird replied to katbird's topic in KY Football (High School)
I am a huge admirer of Dale Mueller. This is a man that was a great motivator of young men who helped them believe in themselves and pull more from within themselves for the good of the whole. Coaches like Dale are far and few between. As a Highlands Alumni I am looking for Brian to be Brian and to be his man. The sample size is small and folks need to give him an opportunity to carve his own niche. -
BluegrassPreps Class 5A Pre-Season Rankings (Discussion)

I look for an improved season for the 'Birds but will find out a whole lot in the next three weeks starting with Cincy St. X on Friday night. Gentlemen the season is about to begin! -
Highlands has used a TE rarely over the years. Even when Derrick Smith was there he might start out at TE but more times than not he would split out wide. I have watched Highlands TE's run free over the middle of the field and rarely be thrown the ball. Maybe this is the year that changes!

I believe the last losing season for Highlands was 1955. My math says 61 years. Hmm...don't think one losing season in that length of time is reason for concern. I am an Alumni and proud of it. Is everything great? No it's not...because we did not win a State Championship. You see, that is the goal every year! Some quick math will tell you we have failed to achieve that goal more times than we have achieved it; but that has never stopped us from working toward it. Stop the noise; the 'Birds will be back! Maybe not to dominate like we did in the recent past but we will be back.

If Dixie can run they can make it a game. If Cov Cath turns that off the fat lady can start singing "Turn off the lights..." -
Simon Kenton/Ryle Predictions

I was more impressed with SK's tandem of Racke and Shearer but Morgan is very good. Should be fun. -
Good pictures. Really a nice game on both sides of the ball. Conner's QB was a good runner and #12 had a really strong game as a WR and a safety. Highlands used some great imagination in their play calling. Congrats to all.

Very humbling. It is also embarrassing not to see an effort to correct the defensive side of the ball. The last halftime correction I remember was the second half of the last game in 2014. Except for that half the sweep has been an unaddressed issue for at least three years.

I have been watching Highlands since 1956. They did not win every year but they have been competitive. They will be back and they won't dodge competition. Dale was an exceptional coach and a great motivator but people need to give Brian an opportunity to be his own guy and not be compared to Dale every time the Birds take a loss. We may take a loss to SK on Friday. I wonder what that will make the Birds all time against SK? -
The game really turned on the first offensive drive of the second half. Kentucky started out so positive. Had the big catch and run; really thought they were going to take it in and erase the memories of last year against Louisville. Nope. It was a collapse offensively again. I know the defense gave up a lot of points but this failure is on the offense for not being able to stay on the field and give the defense see rest. Florida could be real ugly.

Looking forward to next week!

Highlands vs. St. X (Cincy) Scrimmage
Bluebird replied to HHSHOG62's topic in KY Football (High School)
Dale Mueller was an outstanding coach and is an outstanding man; what he brought to the program places him on a plane with Homer Rice as the pinnacle of coaches at Highlands. Let's not sell Brian Weinrich short; give him some time to put his stamp on the program as the head guy. We tend to forget he was the assistant head coach during the latter part of Dale's tenure. It is all about the kids and their dedication and motivation. I have been watching Highlands play for 60 years and from what I saw at St. X on Friday night they will show up to play on Friday night. -
Tracking the UK starting QB competition

The biggest knock on Barker so far has been his decision making off the field; when he started the Vandy game he was put in a pressure situation and played like a freshman. Give the man a chance but let's hope someone has been counseling the young man about life as well as x's and o's.
