Craig Yeast went to Harrodsburg. In the 90s, the Hogs had at least 3 future NFL players on their teams. Jason? Dunn, Craig Yeast, & Dennis Johnson. Julius Yeast was probably talented enough, but didn't cut it at OSU.

So, is it confirmed that Jerry Perry is going to be coaching at Boyle County? Does he have a teaching position, there?

Just guessing, but I am assuming Coach Perry turned down an opportunity in WKY and Boyle picked up a DL coach in Jerry Perry. I heard that Billy Goldsmith retired to focus on other opportunities. If true, Boyle has another great coach to add to the stable... Also reunites Perry and Hester, who collaborated to bring a lot of success to Garrard back in the 90s.

Can't speak to Ashland and Boone.... But, the reason he isn't at Dunbar is twofold. 1) Couldn't get guarantees to get staff in the building and 2) Lack of flexibility for coaches within the FCPS system - not because of his salary or teaching duties. Pretty sure he has his principals certificate.

So, how do we qualify someone as being part of a "tree?" I find that coaches often take on the personality of guys they played for. However, it seems most coaches get their coaching philosophies, schemes, methods, etc. from guys they worked under. So, how do we define a "branch?" For example, Shadon Brown could theoretically be from the trees of French, Chuck King at Cumberlands, Ron Finley & Mark Peach at Campbellsville, or Sam Harp.

I think a more accurate statement might be the Chuck has been linked to every job in the state that has been open this year... He has neither applied for, interviewed for, nor even shown interest in the vast majority of them.

I think there are two different discussions going on, here... There are two basic types of "great" coaches that everyone seems to be talking about: 1. The Program Builder (a'la Chuck Smith) 2. The Powerhouse Leader (a'la Bob Beatty) Maybe everyone could give their thoughts on each of the two types???

Jerry Perry is a GREAT coach. He has proven himself in the past, building Garrard into a perennial top-10 program while he was there... A program which has had limited success in the rest of its history (notwithstanding a state semi-final season in 2011). Furthermore, 16 years of service to one school shows loyalty - even if it wasn't returned. Sucks for him because I know he turned down HC jobs in the last few years.

Of course the facilities have improved since they have been winning state championships... Duh! Still, the stadium was/is nothing special. Their weight facilities and locker rooms were small and cramped (although I think they may have done a little remodeling since Coach French has been there). And I guess in all your experiences on Boyle County's field, you must have never been there during or after rain. The field never drained properly and was a constant source of trouble for the program. And since you seem convinced of the advantages of Boyle's one school district, you should probably factor in the fact that the median household income in Boone County is double that in Boyle County. Which means wealthier parents, higher property values, and thus, more school-tax revenues. Regardless, you were, AT BEST, using disputable "facts" to try to downplay an outstanding football coach's accomplishments. Don't know why you can't give the man his due - Boyle was at the bottom of the heap when Chuck Smith got there, and he won SIX state championships with them. Then again, haters gon' hate.

True, but in most cases, an FOIA request will take weeks, sometimes months, to process. By that time a search would be over. Plus, there are instances where a public institution can deny an FOIA and/or are exempt from open meeting laws. Hiring & Firing are usually exempted. In most cases, they could get the information after the fact, but the institution would have grounds to delay until after the hiring/firing is completed.

A lot of this is simply NOT TRUE. First, Boyle's facilities were not new. Heck, they just got the turf 3? years ago. Before that, Boyle's field was probably the worst in the area. They still don't even have a fieldhouse, for crying out loud. Aside from the turf, their facilities are not very good, still. And they were not, nor have they ever been, in a one school district. Have you never heard of Danville High School? By the way, for all of Coach Smith's run, Danville had a 300 win coach that was winning State Championships, as well. The thing that a lot of people don't know about Danville is that the Danville Independent School District actually extends beyond the city's borders. You are right about the administration wanting a winner. But, I think Smith would have to be convinced of that before he takes ANY job.

Actually, I beg to differ with a small point... Danville did run the triple option up until the late 90s (at least until 1996 - when Mike Floro was QB). QB crow-hopped and everything. They also ran an off-tackl belly-read look, as well as standard toss sweeps, buck sweeps and power off-tackle plays - but they were still option-heavy, then. I remember their scrimmages with Garrard when Perry coached there - they ran virtually the same offenses and defenses. Those were brutal scrimmages. But you are right that even the veer run from split-back and from the wishbone are very different. At any rate, I don't think Coach Harp got any of that from Duffy.

Also, I am pretty sure that Coach Harp didn't run a run-and-shoot at Anderson or early at Danville. Thought he was pretty much a straight wishbone guy up until the late 90s.

Wonder what happens with Coach Perry? Hard to see him sticking around Danville. I understand the thought process... New start and all - but it is still a tough decision. Perry was a successful head coach (still all-time wins leader at Garrard, probably), and gave your program a lot of loyal service (one might expect that 15 + years would be pretty valuable). Where does he end up? I know he has turned down several jobs over the last couple of years.

Chuck Smith made mountain ref relax... Maybe Chuck Smith can't even do that. Seriously, though - there are two points I have to make about Chuck Smith: 1) I don't know how fun you are, mountain ref, but Chuck Smith is a really great guy to be around. 2) Saying Chuck Smith couldn't cut it in the college coaching ranks is ridiculous. He produced a string of All-SEC linebackers at UK. More impressively, he consistently developed players at that position. As far as the Lamar Dawson recruitment -- the only reason UK even got a foot in the door is because of Chuck Smith. Once he got that foot in, Joker badly botched the recruitment and Dawson absolutely did not like Rick Minter.

Coach Perry was a GREAT head coach at Garrard County... There is no reason to think he wouldn't be great at Danville, if he wants the job. From my limited knowledge of the situation, it seems Danville has always struggled to maintain quality coaching STAFFS. There have always been on or two quality assistants, but the rest seemed to be para-professionals with ties to the program and questionable credentials. You have to have coaches at a program to have success, not guys who coach.

My understanding from FCPS coaches is that this is a "bell to bus" rule. In other words, coaches have two hours from the end of school to get their kids out of practice. This includes film session, weightlifting, and practice, itself. Pretty tough to build a program that way.

There are some pretty significant issues with athletics in FCPS, in general - such as the "two-hour" rule.

But there are structural/administrative obstacles in place for the Lexington schools.

Garrard 28-14... FYI, Southern has NEVER beaten Garrard.

I doubt the current Bourbon staff set this schedule. They probably won't have a crack at scheduling till next season. FWIW, there is something to be said for rest and confidence, as well.

Boyle has, over the past 20 years, done better than just about anyone in the state at developing players... They have turned an awful lot of Jimmies into Joes. So, I think the MS argument holds less sway with Boyle... I will say that, from what I have seen and heard, this current MS team is weakest in a long time. However, last season's team was pretty good. Boyle will be fine if they have a down 8th grade class every couple of years, but if those start to string together, it could be problematic. FWIW, I don't know much about the other coaches, but Chuck Miller joining Chris Pardue at Mercer is a huge addition... He was the backbone of the Boyle Strenght & Conditioning program at their zenith.

I believe there are two separate issues, here: 1) Individuals deciding to wear pink. I understand the resistance to that, and I wouldn't allow one player to do it. 2) A team working on a campaign to raise money and/or awareness... I think ANY time you can get a group of young people thinking about themselves as part of a larger world, it is a good thing. I am not sure why some posters seem to indicate there would be a problem with doing this for other diseases (i.e. AIDS, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, other forms of cancer, etc.), but I think it would be a great thing. The stated purpose most coaches give for pursuing their vocation is a desire to help young men become better people. I think this type of thing would fit right in with that mission.
