Paul Laurence Dunbar fires head coach Derrick Thomas

Wow...is Dunbar shooting themselves in the foot or what? How many does that make them in how many years? No experienced coach would touch that job in my opinion.

I think they've had seven coaches since 2000.

I hate that for Thomas and the kids. There is no doubt in my mind or anyone else's that Dunbar could become something big, but this is all on the administration. Some big time stability has to be established, and from the sounds of it, that might be a fantasy more than reality.

I saw a picture before the girls state soccer final that they still had the soccer team and football team practicing on the game field...at the same time. That's been going on for years. I'm sure that's real productive for both.

Dunbar used to be the model of success. It is hard to believe how far they have fallen.

-District titles: 1997 and 2000

-State Runner-up: 1996

-State Semifinals: 2002 and 2003

-Regional Finals: 1997, 2000, 2005

-Won a Playoff Game: Every season from 1996 to 2007, with the exception of 2004 and 2006 (years they didn't make the playoffs)

This place is a death hole for coaching, stay away from Dunbar, not sure what they are looking for but chances are your not it!

The parent/administration/school board political environment at Dunbar is terrible.

This is a terrible move but it is par for the course at Dunbar, unfortunately. The problems are well beyond football. This school should be doing much better in most sports.

Thomas took a close family friend into the program for only his senior year and that kid is now playing college ball.

This is just a bad situation. Hopefully Thomas will find something and keep coaching.

Absurd, we see the same thread every other year. Why would the kids or any high ranking coach give this program a second thought?

Something is very wrong at Dunbar. This problem is a lot bigger than football. Some of the coaches have been successful elsewhere, yet fail miserably at Dunbar and get shoved out the door at any sign of life. The facilities are top notch. There are athletes in the school. What is going on.

I think the problem lies with in the PLD Administration, they don't give their coaches any time to get things going unless they are already winning. I feel bad for the kids that have to go through this all the time over there and If I was a high ranking coach I'd go to a middle school before I would PLD. Just my two cents

Problem is not the Coaching. Looks like the probelm is lack of leadership in the Admin.!

There are some pretty significant issues with athletics in FCPS, in general - such as the "two-hour" rule.

Assume it is a practice time limit?
I did too. I just find it hard to believe that's a rule. Pretty tough to succeed under those restraints.
