Head Coaches Applying for New Jobs and BluegrassPreps

1. Is it wrong/bad to post that a current head coach is applying for another job?

We are all aware of the 1st amendment and the easy answer would be to automatically say yes it is ok to post that information. Try to look at other angles in addition to the obvious. I am not looking for a certain answer. But, if I don't put this in here, we will probably get most replies regarding the 1st amendment and it would be good to hear some other thoughts or reasons behind your answer.

What if the head coach wants it known he is applying? If you know there are opportunities for much more money and wish your current school would step up, maybe you let it be known you are applying.

The onus is on the schools to not let this information out. If I were in school administration selecting a head coach, I would be very upset if information on applicants got out. If the applicants can't trust you to maintain confidentiality, you might miss out on some coaches applying.

First of all, shouldn't there really be an expectation of confidentiality when interviewing for a job? Not just in athletics, but in any profession? Second, no one can be faulted for wanting to improve their economic position. Third, the people being hurt most by the lack of confidentiality in this process are the kids! Fourth, is that spreading of disinformation about such a process could be used to try to intentionally damage a competing program. In general, I don't like it at all.

First of all, shouldn't there really be an expectation of confidentiality when interviewing for a job?

Considering that a Freedom of Information Act request can be filed to see who applies for public school jobs then I'd say that expectation is no longer real.

Good point.

True, but in most cases, an FOIA request will take weeks, sometimes months, to process. By that time a search would be over. Plus, there are instances where a public institution can deny an FOIA and/or are exempt from open meeting laws. Hiring & Firing are usually exempted. In most cases, they could get the information after the fact, but the institution would have grounds to delay until after the hiring/firing is completed.

One of the major problems that you have sometimes is that the information is not true!! Someone heard from a friend or someone that someone might be interested in a job or are unhappy about the way things are going at current school and BAM it is the fact to end all facts and people post and comment without having facts or truth behind it. Rumors are not a good thing and by no means should they be spread so freely on a site where a lot of kids read on here. It is great that the site is so popular but sometimes reckless information can be taken as the gospel by some and especially kids who are so impressionable. I definately think it is on the school to keep the names of their applicants confidental and know that some schools out there do a geat job of this. Just my opinion. Good thread BTW Chief

Without question, it is wrong. Debate it till the cows come home, it's still wrong.

To clarify, my question means is it ok to post if the information is fact. I would think most of us would agree that posting false information is wrong.

Something else to consider, if a coach submits his résumé, does that mean he has applied, or does he still have the ability to say he has not applied until he has submitted a formal application?

If a coach calls to inquire about a job, and is asked to submit a resume, does that mean he has formally applied for the job?

To me, if you give them your résumé, you applied. What does everyone else think?

I appreciate guru and how he runs BGPreps. This info is going to hit the Internet. The way he does it is the best way I can imagine it being done. That is why I support him and BGPREPS.

The check is in the mail Chief.

I think the scenarios you mention fall under the big category of "applied" to most fans. The rest is really semantics.

I think it is ok as long as all of our "sources" are treated the same. As long as you start your post with "The word on the street is..." then you are just doing what others have done.

Well my mama always taught me what happens in the dark always comes to light. So I would say if you do it, be ready for the consequences. I think the sad part is that most people do not know the whole truth and nothing but the truth, due to the fact coaches, are normally classy people who don't spread their business, air their laundry, or blame others.
