Well as a general practice I think administrators should not be talking to amyone about who applied for what until they are at a stage where they are calling references. At that point you know it is going to get out. Also, once interviews start you know it will get out because someone will see you on campus or someone on the committee will say something about who is interviewing.

I think it is ok as long as all of our "sources" are treated the same. As long as you start your post with "The word on the street is..." then you are just doing what others have done.

 

I am not sure I follow you here other than to say it is impossible to treat everyone the the same in life. What you can do is treat everyone fairly.

I've always viewed BGP as an online discussion that matches what's being talked about "offline." Sure, G has created a spot online that gets a lot of eyeballs but it's not like people who are not on BGP aren't talking about what they've heard regarding coaches.

Kind of like sports referees and umpires choosing to volunteer their time(for a small fee), they are opening themselves up to the criticism from fans on questionable calls, which are also publicily discuss on this board.

Coaching are 1 year contracts, therefore every year they are looking for a job, whether staying where they are, or somewhere else. Its just part of it.

Good topic of discussion. I think it has always been understood by the applicants and the administrations of schools that neither would disclose that an applicant has applied. Now, I think that was understood, but at the same time I think it was understood that some information would leak, because the applicant is going to ask around about the job they applied for to see if it is a good job or not, and the administration is going to brag about their applicants for the job, and they are going to ask around about the applicants to see if that person is someone they want to hire. So, the real understanding is, the coach is not going to outright state they applied for the job, and the school is not going on the record to say this guy applied for the job.

 

What that leads to is, speculation and innuendo. Fans are going to say, "this big named guy applied for our job", there are going to be speculation about who applied and inevitably someone is going to say, "this guy applied". The bottom line is, there is rarely an absolute that a given person applied, it mostly speculation that can't be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. And that is the way the schools and the applicants want it. Everyone gets to talk about the job opening and no one can prove that anyone in particular applied.

However, when it leaks out that xyz coach is a candidate at abc high school the kids that are in the current program of xyz, or even in the feeder system, that are not yet bound by the transfer rule start considering the possibility that coach xyz is not going to be there, they start thinking about visiting other programs. How could you blame them?

I agree with that. While I am not a big fan of disclosing that a current head coach as one school has applied for a job at another school, I do see the other side of the coin. If the head coaching job is open at my school, I want to know who applied so that I can state my opinion to the school administration. I think the students at both schools deserve to know what is going on with the coach opening.

Hey that's life. If a coach doesn't want info of him getting an interview, then DON'T interview. The other school or that dad on their hiring committee, especially if it's an interesting hire or a big name will get on BGpreps under screen name will talk about it. I see nothing wrong with info getting out ESPN and other cable news outlets do it all the time.

 

IT's the TECHNOLOGY age of super fast news and it's part of life now. If coaches can't do it then they need not to apply or deal with reality.

I believe any information that gets out before the interview phase is a severe breach of confidence by the interviewing school and should be embarrassing to that school's administration. Once you get to interviews, the coaches interviewing should expect it to be found out their interviewing. It just isn't realistic to expect that not to get out today. So if you are a coach considering an opportunity, that is the line where you need to decide how serious you are. Send in the application and get a conversation with the administration to determine if you really want the job and trust the school to maintain confidentiality. Once you agree to interview, expect public knowledge to happen and be prepared to deal with the possible consequences.

I agree that this info is going to get out and that is the way things are now. The Internet is not going away. That's why I think it is important to support BGPreps because this site handles/manages that reality as well as I can imagine it being done.

 

The rules here, moderators, etc. add to the credibility of BGP as a forum and source of information.
