I polled 17 High School Head Coaches yesterday on who is the greatest Head coach in Ky
history
. I got 14 for Chuck, 2 for Dale Mueller, and 1 Joe Jaggers.

Harry Doyle posted the following, good stuff:

All more than deserving to be in the discussion, and all have valid backing for why they should be.

Chuck Smith- Well, it's what this thread has turned into. No doubt he is a great coach, and one of the all time bests. You don't come into a program like Boyle County was at the time, build it into what he lead and not be in the discussion. 5 in a row with 6 straight appearances. If you don't put that in discussions of who is at the top, you're crazy.

Dale Mueller- He took over in '95 that was already one of Kentucky's elites, and has turned them in THE Public School program in the state of Kentucky. He has won 10 titles since '95, including the last 6. I think that is right? 10. If not, I know that will be corrected by the masses out here. :) That list of titles is just going to keep on growing as well, because I don't see anybody or anything slowing this machine down. I just don't. They dominated 4A this year, and all you heard was how Highlands was "down."

Joe Jaggers- The winner of 5 State Titles and currently 6th or 7th on the All-Time wins list. What's impressive about Jaggers' IMO, is the fact that not only did he win multiple state titles. But, he won them at places that NEVER won titles before he came, and they haven't won one since he left (Trigg County- '71 & '72; Fort Knox- '83, '88 & '90). He finished up his career at North Hardin after the '98 season. While he never won a 4A Title at North Hardin, he got them to Two State Semi appearances ('91 vs. St X and '94 vs. Trinity). North Hardin hadn't been to a State Semi before, and hasn't since he left.

Sam Harp - I can't believe he isn't in the discussion more. Not only is he in the pack on the All Time Wins list, but he, like Mueller took over a state power and turned them into a juggernaut. From '88- '06, Danville had 10 State Final appearances, and won 7 of them; for those counting. He and Danville won titles spanding over 3 decades!

There are so many different intangibles to separate when determining the best.

Certainly this wasn't a scientific poll but it does speak volumes about Chuck Smith.

Thoughts?

It probably speaks more to the dislike of Dale Mueller that is prevelant with many opposing coaches than the superior coaching abilities of Chuck Smith. Smith did great things at Boyle and I'm sure he's a great coach but what Mueller has done with taking Highlands to another level is pretty remarkable. Like him or not Dale Mueller has accomplished way more in the high school ranks than Chuck Smith.

I agree that Dale is not well liked but that is for another thread.

By the way, in my limited experiences with Coach Mueller he has always been fantastic with me/BGP.

Like BigZig I think you have add Mike Yeagle to the discussion. How many titles was it in how many years?

Where is Mike Yeagle now, does he still coach?

May be for another thread, but it greatly impacts why Smith got so many more votes than Dale did from football coaches in my opinion.

Smith benefits from the fact that he hasn't been a head coach for some time, beating other coaches by big scores. Absence does make the heart grow fonder.

And I'll repeat what I've said before: with some exceptions (including Chief Smoke in particular as one of those exceptions), from my dealings with football coaches, a whole lot of them are like old wash women. They like to gossip and repeat rumors without wanting to take the time to see if they are even true. Love what they do for the youth of this state and appreciate the great sacrifices they make to do so, but a lot of them are what they are.

Which is a nice way of saying that, without knowing the coaches that were polled, I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in who they consider to be the best Ky high school coach in history.

Beatty not mentioned?

Considering the discussion started in the Chuck Smith/Boone County thread what I (and I hope the powers that be) took away from it is that Chuck Smith is by far the best coach available for the Boone job.

Great points on Mueller but sometimes I think he is his own worst enemy.

You are so right with your wash women comment which is one of the reasons I find it funny they get offended when we do a little wash here at BGP.

Excellent point on Beatty!

I will try to help out .. and work through the numbers for Yeagle:

1991: State Championship

1992: State Championship

1993: State Championship

1994: State Championship

1995: Lost In Finals (One point away from winning 7 in a Row)

1996: State Championship

1997: State Championship

1998: Lost in Semi-Finals

1999: State Championship

2000: Lost in 2nd Round

2001: Lost in 2nd or 3rd

2002: Did not coach (Lost in Finals)

2003: Lost in Finals

2004: State Championship

2005: Lost in 2nd Round (Resigned at the End of the Season)

14 Seasons

10 Trips to the Finals

8 State Championships

(If there is anything above that is incorrect ... it definitely was not intentional)

Chuck, Mueller, and I'm going to get a meltdown with some people, but he may have a porsche, but he don't wreck it and that is Bob Beatty. There have been many Trinity coaches, but this guy is has won a (Mythical) Nat. Championship and about 10 state titles. He has only been a head coach in KY since 1999. Pretty good in my book.

Mike Yeagle

Mike Glaser

Sam Harp

Jack and Joe Morris

Joe Jaggers

Phillip Haywood

Dennis Lampley

I would stop there as "Greatest"

Next:

Bob Schneider

Shawn Berner

Marty Jaggers

Tom Larky

Pat Gates

Ivan McGlone

Dudley Hilton

Ty Scroggins

Jack Haskins

Bob Clayton
