  1. Boyle has, over the past 20 years, done better than just about anyone in the state at developing players... They have turned an awful lot of Jimmies into Joes. So, I think the MS argument holds less sway with Boyle... I will say that, from what I have seen and heard, this current MS team is weakest in a long time. However, last season's team was pretty good. Boyle will be fine if they have a down 8th grade class every couple of years, but if those start to string together, it could be problematic. FWIW, I don't know much about the other coaches, but Chuck Miller joining Chris Pardue at Mercer is a huge addition... He was the backbone of the Boyle Strenght & Conditioning program at their zenith.
  2. I believe there are two separate issues, here: 1) Individuals deciding to wear pink. I understand the resistance to that, and I wouldn't allow one player to do it. 2) A team working on a campaign to raise money and/or awareness... I think ANY time you can get a group of young people thinking about themselves as part of a larger world, it is a good thing. I am not sure why some posters seem to indicate there would be a problem with doing this for other diseases (i.e. AIDS, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, other forms of cancer, etc.), but I think it would be a great thing. The stated purpose most coaches give for pursuing their vocation is a desire to help young men become better people. I think this type of thing would fit right in with that mission.
  3. Johnny Poynter ran his wheels off last year... I think he averaged 30+ carries a game. As a result, I don't think he was near fresh enough at the end of the season, and I think he might actually have been hurt in the playoffs (can't remember, for sure though). I also know that he has had some nagging kind of stuff this year. Nothing wrong with 15 carries for a high school back.
  4. Applicable Info on Title IX: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance..." This, along with the OCR's three pronged "test" for discrimination could also be applied to boys.
  5. If you drop football and boys basketball, wouldn't you have to drop everything else? Those sports are usually the only revenue generators for athletics programs. I would also think Title IX would dictate that you also have to drop girls bball and volleyball, regardless of the money.
  6. The LEAST number of schools affected would have been to keep Nelson County in its current obligations for scheduling...
  7. Garrard County could have several freshmen contribute... Probably not starters, but definitely some that could contribute.
  8. I would guess this has more to do with developing stabilizing muscles (neck, shoulders, etc.) than because of velocity.
  9. I don't care how many are championship-level programs... Private schools do not operate by the same enrollment restrictions that public schools do - it is simple... Private schools can recruit, with little oversight. Every team in the KHSAA should have to play by the same rules - or not be able to play teams that do. I also believe the KHSAA needs to completely end its favoritism toward certain public school coaches & programs when it comes to transfers.
  10. Garrard is not as small and rural as depicted - it has consistently been one of the fastest growing counties in the state... That said, it is like most county schools, there are ebbs and flows in talent-level. Still, a lot of talented athletes have played at Dyehouse Stadium (particularly during the mid 1990s and early 00s). I believe they are in an uptick. The incoming Seniors are good players and outstanding leaders, the junior and sophomore classes will not be loaded with freak athletes, but there are some solid players there. The Freshmen-to-be have an opportunity to be great - if the class sticks together for four years. Coach Scenters has done an excellent job of rebuilding the numbers by adding the right kind of young men. He has very high expectations for the program. 2011 showed that Garrard County can field a top-level team. 2012 and beyond will show whether or not GC can produce a top-level program... Which it hasn't really done since the 90s. It should be fun.
  11. One thing that is not being discussed is the role of new types of helmets in this phenomenon. The Revolution style helmets put a lot more pressure on the chinstrap as a support - therefore, they pop off more often.
  12. Coach Scenters has done a lot of good things with the program... The best thing he has done is build a program that is about something more than winning football games. As for on the field: I think the Lions may employ a more high-percentage passing game. Coach Scenters will run the ball... Period. Still, Abney is probably their best returning player (Caudill, however, is a stud - one wonders how they will utilize him next season). Defensively, I think they will be okay. BTW, it may not help much in 2012, but there is a really solid incoming freshman class coming up.
  13. IF we are a laughingstock, it isn't because of the number of classes... You can certainly argue that the KHSAA's constant genuflection to basketball is a problem, but I don't think the class sytem is... BTW, I would support 4 public school classes and a separate division for private schools. For the life of me, I can't understand why the KHSAA can't figure out that programs should all have to follow the same rules. You can't do that without isolating private-school programs. Then again, all public school programs don't have the rules equally applied, either...
  14. They will have to replace a ton of offensive production and a lot of tackles on defense. Good news - they return their entire OL, DL, two starting LBs, and a QB.
  15. That is probably disregarding the damage that is done in small increments. There are studies that show the "smaller" impacts of headers, in soccer, can be just as damaging as the collisions in football.
  16. As of now, middle school sports are not regulated by the KHSAA.
  17. Not saying he isn't a good coach, or that he doesn't do great things, just that he always seems to have "happy feet." Even during the 4 years at Trimble, he interviewed for every job under the sun.
  18. Not saying this was the case at Bourbon, as I am not sure... But it seems to me that Coach Poynter's biggest issue is that he always seems to have his eye on his "next" job. If I was an AD, looking to hire someone to jump start my program - I might hire him. If I was an AD that was looking for someone over the long hall, I don't think I would.
