I'm not sure what others do but when my son played, I always took him out to our backyard and threw him little plastic golf balls at him to hit. You have to hit it just right to get a line drive. It makes the baseball look like a watermelon come game time and with a bigger ball, you have a little more error to get that line-drive unlike you do with a plastic golfball. My son always tore the cover of the ball and I really attribute that to countless hours in the backyard doing this drill. It translated over into his high school team asking him to bring the balls to hit with before the game started his senior year. It really helped the ball club as offensively that year, they were one of the best in Northern Kentucky. Does any team or any family member doing something similar with their kids/players?

I completely agree. Both of those are the top 2 coaches year in and year out. Meyerhoff coached my son during the summer several years ago. He is a great guy to be around and an even better coach. He always got the best out of his players.

Looks like Beechwood could be very scary next year when they return all their players.

I'm not a 100% sure on how long he has been the head coach it but I know he has beenin that position since the 2008 season, the last year my son played. I know him well as he coached my son on the Colonels. Good man and the players absolutely love him.

Scott has some talent but they are extremely young. Most of the entire team is made up of 8th graders alone. There record has not reflected some of the talent they do have but that will come with more experience. Scott will be good in a few years down the road but right now? Not so much..

Scott has become much more than a "decent" program lately. They have made some very, very big strides over the years and are one of the top teams in NKY and the 10th Region year-in and year-out.

Sounds like George Sparks got the start then. Its a little puzzling though when you choose to not pitch your best pitcher in a district matchup. Zach Sowder is one of the best pitchers in the region (arguably #2 behind Logan Dailey of Harrison) and I'm a little puzzled at Coach Roberts decision to go elsewhere... Well hopefully it pays off in the end.

Any idea who pitched for Scott? I wasn't able to attend the game as my son had a game elsewhere for the Scott freshman team.

Reed Spata(8th grade) SS/P for Scott Varsity, sometimes JV and Jared Best(FR) plays 2nd base for Scott varsity and Joey Heeb(Soph) plays 2nd,SS,3rd.

What schools are looking at him currently?

Scott has beaten Mason County this year twice 13-3 and 10-0 via run-rule so I'd have to flip those two.

It is somewhat of a rebuilding year for Scott. They have a pitching staff with some experience as well as one of the best pitchers in the 10th Region in Zach Sowder. However, past that its been all question marks. Lots of inexperience and youth in the field at all positions. Scott at the beginning of the year had lots of defensive liabilities and had alot of errors because of it but it seems they have ironed some of those things out from the looks of things. They will be a much better team by the end of the year after their players are able to a season's worth of experience under their belts.

Smallwood is another lefty for them and he is the ace of the staff.

The 37th, in general, has always been stronger than the 34th but maybe not this year.

^Yes but I had my doubts about that. They have one of the best pitchers in the region and the best one by far in the 37th. However, their fielding has been atrocious even though their pitching has been pretty good thus far.

It could be a very long season for the Eagles. They just don't have any varsity experience on their squad other than Sowder and some of other pitchers and it shows in their games.

Scott has one of the best pitchers in the region in Sowder and has a decent staff to go along with him but after that its a complete mess. The great equalizer in baseball is the pitching position. You will see alot of close games this year against the good and bad teams. It might be a long year for Scott after going to the 10th Region Championship the past 2 years.

Sat in for a Scott Freshman/JV Scrimmage tonight and also got a chance to observe the Varsity team in action for a bit of their practice. As for now, anything having them #2 in the region is an overrated ranking. They are, IMO, about #4 or #5 in the region. My son also was able to talk to one of the players since we were there watching our youngest play but right now they are extremely young and inexperienced and thus are dealing with the growing pains that are associated with that. However, with that being said, Scott has some real talent in the wings in the younger teams. Scott will compete for the region, as they have the past 2 years with 2 regional-runner ups, in the next few years, but not this one unfortunately. Thats just my opinion on the situation at this time though.

Carr has never "verbally abused" a kid ever at Scott. He gets on them and it is often magnified due to the fact that he is very loud and vocal during games so it appears to be worse than it really is. Carr has the kids best interests at heart and has always had time for them and their needs. We are talking about the integrity of a guy who has given Scott so much. If Carr is really out of line, why hasn't there been more issues in the past? Why now all of a sudden?

The results speak for themselves. Some discipline has to be instilled into the kids. You can't just baby them all the way through school. He teaches them accountability and I would be glad to have him coach my younger son if he so choose to play basketball at Scott when he enters there next year.

I completely agree, very different things. If Carr sticks around those "fine" years might turn into something great or "special". If he leaves, they were given the framework early and will follow it but under a different coach, things may not turnout to what they could have been.

Well the program would be fine maybe 2-3 years down the road if Carr left. Past that, it would be up entirely to the new coach and his staff to develop the players that are coming in from the middle schools, etc. So, for a time, Scott would be fine. Past that time interval we would see the effect of Carr leaving the program.

Elliott County's coach did the exact thing this past year. It makes you feel like the coach was only there to begin with because of a select few athletes/players and not for everyone like they should be.
