I'll be interested to hear the recap. I thought this was a rebuilding year for Scott.

This was the second game in a row that I must start out by congratulating the team CovCath played. This time Scott (Kenton) did as St. Henry did and played flawless in the field, executed when needed at the plate and didn't take themselves out of the game.

 

Congrats Eagles on a very well played game of baseball. Quit frankly that is how you are suppose to play the game and Mr. Adkins outstanding job tonight.

 

The Good: CovCath, Chris Gerwe! Even in getting the loss, Chris pitched a whale of a game. He gave up only 4 hits, only walked one batter and struck out 5 while giving up only 1 earned run of the 3 scored today.

 

The Bad: CovCath not executing at the plate. When your team is set up to play small ball, your players have to execute the bunt and when they do move the runners around by bunting, you need to hit the ball to knock them in. CovCath at the moment isn't doing that.

 

The UGLY: UGLY base running and that is an understatement by CovCath. Running from base to base, not talking the extra base on a single and having runners who just seem not to understand how the game is suppose to be played on the base paths.

 

Yes this is a young team with only few starter from last year squad but some of the mental mistakes on the base paths, I haven't seen some older knothole kids make. These mistakes IMVHO are from not understanding want their options are, or from just not understanding how to play smart solid, winning baseball.

 

BAWAC Inc: Defensive play of the game: Actually a couple of plays by each team as they were all good enough to make a mention of them:

 

Scott top of the 1st: Laughlin at the plate and he hits a blast that sends the ball to the fence but Neil Martin with his back up against the fence reaches up and grabs the ball for the third out of the inning!

 

Scott top of the 4th: Rothfuss hits a rocket right down the third base line and just as the ball goes over the third base bag for a fair ball, Matt Klien dives to the ground to grab the ball, then gets to his feet to throw out the batter. Outstanding play that quite frankly you rarely see HS kids make!

 

CovCath half of the 4th: CovCath Grosser hits a shot up the middle only to have the Eagles SS Sowder scoop up the ball, tag second base with his foot and then throws a strike to first for a 6-3 DP.

 

Scott: Other than a Balk by Adkins in the in the 5th inning Scott doesn't make a error in the field.

 

Pee Wees Place Offensive play of the game: Scott's top of the seventh, with the game tied 2-2. Adkins goes 1-3, one out. Bezold hits a double. One out, man on second. Krumps takes out Gerwe, and bring in Schlagbaum. Sparks goes 6-3 for the second out but Bezold moves to Third on the throw to first. Man on third two outs. First pitch; strike one, second pitch; strike two, third pitch; ball low and away, fourth pitch; is a curve ball that is thrown wide of the plate and the runner comes home to score a earn run. Sparks finishes his bat by walking and Smith K's to end the inning!

Sorry, can't wait for the Old Guy. My boss' son Zach Bezold player of the game. Two hits and two runs scored and both of them go ahead runs and the best catch by a catcher on a bunt attempt I've ever seen.

Being a former catcher Old Guy, how could you leave out the catch by Bezold?

CCH has lots of pitchers who are unknown commodities. I'd like to see them get some work just to see who you can count on at the end of the season. IT seems like every time I read a recap its Gerwe being relieved by Schlagbaum.

 

I'd continue to give Jack Grosser ABs. The young man is a true baseball player and can help this offensively-challenged team.

 

The kid who seems to come up with one hit in every game so far is the #9 hitter Severson.

Obviously, he's well-coached. Strong defensive catcher.

It is somewhat of a rebuilding year for Scott. They have a pitching staff with some experience as well as one of the best pitchers in the 10th Region in Zach Sowder. However, past that its been all question marks. Lots of inexperience and youth in the field at all positions. Scott at the beginning of the year had lots of defensive liabilities and had alot of errors because of it but it seems they have ironed some of those things out from the looks of things. They will be a much better team by the end of the year after their players are able to a season's worth of experience under their belts.

I found one loss by CovCath to Scott since 1998 and that was in 2003 at Scott. A monumental win at CovCath.
