What exactly do the results tell us? Highlands varsity won a hard-hitting battle by a pretty decent margin. I didn't see all the JV game, but from what I did see it appeared that Highlands JV controlled Ryle JV pretty well. I saw none of the frosh game, but it sounds like Ryle pounded the ball effectively & they obviously won the game. So what does this mean? To me, it's more evidence for those that argue that the key to Highlands' success is hard work. Ryle frosh won, and they should. Their male frosh enrollment must be somewhere around double that of Highlands, and the kids from both schools have had the same amount of time working with their respective high school coaching staffs – only a few months. Given that both schools have strong programs, in my mind it would have been an upset for Highlands to have won. So how do we explain the JV game? Again, Ryle must have double the enrollment in the sophomore class. But this time, both groups of kids have had a year and a half of working in their systems, and this time Highlands controlled the game. Same thing with the varsity – enrollment no doubt favors Ryle, but 3 years of working in the system seems to have benefited the Highlands kids a bit more so than the Ryle kids (not that the Ryle kids haven’t benefited – they obviously have, they’re a good team). I bring this up not to pat anyone on the back, but rather as evidence to use in what seems to have been a consistent discussion topic on this board over the past few years – what is Highlands’ advantage over other local schools? The 2012 Highlands/Ryle varsity game will be interesting to watch & see if the Ryle seniors can “push around” the Highlands seniors the way some have reported they did this week as freshman. See everone in three years!

I've only seen Towles in the Male scrimmage and a couple series from the Ryle JV game, but I'm very impressed. The kids throws on the run extremely well, has good poise, and let's face it, at almost 6'4" he must be able to see the field well!

You might want to drop a dime for a call up to Johnson Central and see how that line of thinking worked out for them in last years playoffs - and believe me, they could RUN the ball. If you're primarily a running team and you get down to Highlands, its over unless you get some serious breaks your way.

I hear that! I would question the order they have these schools in however. IMO, Trinity & Highlands both take Moeller. :confused:

I like it! :ylsuper: Smart football teams that are trying to raise the level of their program play teams like Highlands to let their kids see how the best perform. I don't see why Highlands baseball program shouldn't do the same in their quest to move upward. Heck, they already play Cov Cath, Beechwood, Conner...

I stand corrected. Also must not be the same Jones from Midland then because the Enquirer says he's from Kings.

Total guess, but maybe Hunter's brother? They play together on the Midland Indians (or maybe Braves).

This is a little off topic, but I know the NCAA has been giving serious consideration to scheduling a small amount of regular season games in the fall. With the new later spring start date in college baseball (instituted theoretically to help northern schools), it's getting difficult for schools to get all the games in during the spring w/o wearing the kids out physically, or hurting them academically.

Any observations from yesterday's Highlands/Hamilton 7 on 7? Couldn't make it myself.:confused:

Beechwood has to be in the top five to start the season. Putting them lower than that is wishfull thinking for at least 2 of the schools above them. Once the season is underway, it's about performance, not potential. Beechwood's kids and coaches demonstrated to the entire region this year that they perform. And loosing quickly after this year's regionals will only increase their desire for 2010.

I also agree with Ram, but would add two things: 1) Coaches today must be much more careful how they handle and speak to kids than coaches of one or two decades ago. This fact is indisputable; it's not going to change back. 2) This one is just my opinion: In general, kids today no longer respond to harsh rhetoric from coaches as they have in the past. In most cases they don't hear it from their teachers, they don't hear it from their ministers, and they don't hear it from their parents. So when they hear it from their coaches, it doesn't go in one ear and out the other as easily as it did for you and me. It hangs with them much longer, and can lead to moral problems if it's used too often. Take a look around. There's no more Bear Bryants winning consistently in high school or college football. Maybe now is a good time for one of my favorite quotes from one of the greatest coaches who ever lived: "A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment." - John Wooden

The Ft. Thomas school board will be voting tonight (Monday, 6/8) on the addition of a freshman baseball team for the '09/'10 school year. In the opinion of most observers, this is an absolute must for the program to turn the corner and to continue moving forward. I urge all baseball supporters in Ft. Thomas to attend the meeting & make yourself heard. The meetings begin with an 'open mic' session for the public to address any issues, and a quick statement in support of a freshman team at Highlands would be most helpful I'm sure. The meeting starts at 7:00 PM, in the central office - just down from Smitty's Barber Shop - and if I have to tell you where that is, well then you're not from Ft. Thomas!

There are probably many different formats that would be an improvement over the current, and each would have it's pluses and minuses. Before making any changes though, I think it's best to identify exactly what the goal of the system should be to begin with. So, what is the goal(s) of the baseball playoff? To me, the goal of each level of playoff is something like this: 1) Identify the best team to send off to the next level of playoff (would the best team prevail in most years? If not, maybe the system is not the best.) 2) Provide a quality baseball experience to all those participating - players, families and schools (does everyone take something positive away from the experience, win, loose or draw? If people leave with a sour taste in their mouths, support for the activity will diminish over time.) 3) Negatively impact those participating as minimally as possible (were the educational & monitary impacts to the participants kept as minimal as possible? If getting to & playing in the games is costing the players too much time away from their studies, and is costing them, their families and their schools too much money, is this really an appropriate school activity?) Find a system that maximizes these goals, and I think you've found a good playoff system.

Crazy thing to me is, although he's obviously a stud athlete, he's really not a "man" yet. Think what he's going to do by the time he hits his soph & junior seasons in college.

I'm no baseball expert, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Oliver just left the ball up too much. He had reasonable velocity, but the call came in very straight, and very high. Maile & the boys just pounded him. Now the starting pitcher for Lloyd in the next game didn't have pinpoint accuracy, but he kept the ball down (at least for the first couple innings that I watched), and with what looked like a little late sink action, fared much better.

LN - thanks for the post. As unfortunte as I think the specialization of kid sports is, I agree that it appears to be here to stay. While I believe certain kids will continue to play 2 sports, the vast majority will most likely concentrate on 1, especially considering the ever increasing, although somewhat self-imposed, academic workload. The performance expectations, athletic & academic, placed on students these days by both parents and schools is unbelievably high compared to only 25 years ago. I was a good student, but never even remotely contemplated the types of academic activities now commonplace in the better high schools. An effort that put me towards the top of my class in the 80's, would barely get me to an above average level at Highlands. But getting back to sports, what I'd like to ask of AD's and coaches is to not put roadblocks in place for those kids wanting to play multiple sports. 99% of kids will not be getting athletic scholarships, so let's not deprive them of opportunities now that they'll regret missing later.
