Highlands 2014
How about how many Scott base runners were caught stealing or picked off in that first HHS Frosh baseball game?

Highlands 2014
SG ESQ - Couldn't have said any of that better myself. Thanks for putting into words what so many of us feel. It would appear you've made me an offer I can't refuse. See you next year!

Highlands 7 Dixie Heights 4
The hit by pitch was not at all questionable. Kid stuck his knee way out there. Could be clearly seen by everyone sitting behind the plate. I don't blame him for trying, but the right call was made.

Mason (OH) 3 Highlands 0
I believe that I personally saw the first varsity appearance of every pitcher currently on HHS's roster, and Kreeger's was one of the best that I can remember. Seemed to show no nerves at all. Oddly enough, I can remember at least two others who also entered with bases loaded for their first appearance.

Does Highlands loss.........
Coming in hot indeed. Pretty bold second post.

Was tonight a moral victory for CovCath?
There's no doubt that the decision to punt with 9:00 to go and down by three scores is one that will bother Coach Wirth all winter, and one most likely he'll learn from. Justified or not, it gave everyone at DCM the vibe he was conceding.

Some KY high school football coaches think there is too much practice but...
In my opinion, you cannot adequately answer Ru's question without first defining the purpose of high school sports, and maybe also without defining the purpose of youth sports in general. I don't think you'd have too much difficulty gaining consensus on this board that the place of youth sports in our society has gotten out of wack, and if we'd all take a step back & re-evaluate the purpose of sports to begin with, Ru's question would probably answer itself. We all love our winning programs, but are they serving the purpose they were established for?

Summer Baseball
Spot on. There are plenty of "travel" & "select" teams out there that play at or below D1 Knothole level, especially at the middle & elementary school levels. There are only so many kids playing baseball in the greater Cincinnati area. Of that body of kids, today as compared to 20 years ago a greater percentage of them play SWOL as compared to Knothole, but that doesn't mean that a greater percentage of them are truly select level players, they're just playing in a different league.

Most annoying thing you saw this season?
My appologies. Just figured you were talking about the Regional Championhsip game. I was at the Dixie game also, but don't really remember anything going on. My guess is you might be talking about kids between the backstop & the PA booth, but the Dixie & Conner games are muddling together in my head.

Most annoying thing you saw this season?
Man, am I tired of hearing about this one. Absolutlely nothing went on in the Highlands student section at this game that doesn't go an at every Friday night football game in October all over KY. The only thing that made this any different was the sport, and the fact that the HHS students outnumbered NCC about 20 to 1. Everybody wants more students to come out for baseball games, and every time it happens, we get nonstop whining about what the student section did.

Conner 6 Saint Henry 3
The 7th inning 2 out 2 run Double was hit by Dustin Herrmann not Jared Williams.

Scott 8 Highlands 6
The home plate ump. Unless I'm missing something in the rule, it was a really, really bad call.

Scott 8 Highlands 6
It had a significant impact on the game, although it wasn't the most well played game the Birds have had this year. Disclaimer - my son was on the mound. First the rule: Rule 4.03(a) states "The catcher shall station himself directly back of the plate. He may leave his position at any time to catch a pitch or make a play except that when the batter is being given an intentional base on balls, the catcher must stand with both feet within the lines of the catcher's box until the ball leaves the pitcher's hand. PENALTY: Balk." So let's be clear right off the bat (pun intended) - the Birds were not attempting an intentional walk, so the rule was totally misapplied, and as we all know, in high school we don't throw the pitches on an intentional walk anyway. Bases loaded, less than 3 balls although the exact count at the time escapes me. Pitch-out is called to go after the kid at first. While the pitcher is in his wind-up, the catcher hops up and to the right to catch the pitch-out, which he does & delivers the ball to the first baseman. The home plate ump immediately yells out "catcher's balk," and instructs all base runners to move ahead one spot, giving Scott a run. When questioned, the ump says the catcher can't be out of the catcher's box when the pitch leaves the pitcher's hand. You make the call. This ump has issues.

Highlands 13 Simon Kenton 2 (JV)
The boys indeed hit the ball well again. They're a fun bunch of kids to watch. Tomorrow night against NCC should be a good one.

BBCOR and power numbers in HS baseball
I have no data to back it up, but home run production seems to still be down significantly compared to the old bats.

Brossart 2 Colerain (OH) 1
Congrats on the big win Mustangs! That's three wins across the river for NKY this year so far!

Highlands 9 Holy Cross 5
Nice win for the Birds on a beautiful March day at Highland Park! Well done by Jones after a scary near miss by an absolute bazooka shoot back up the middle by Tiberi. Nicely finished off by J. Ligget also. And a big congrats to E. Allen on his first Var dinger going just right of center only yards from where his previous big double landed. Glad to have you back young man!

Bob Beatty's Comments On Quarterbacks
During his career, Montana engineered 31 fourth quarter comebacks, and 33 game winning drives. When it was on the line, dude was absolutely clutch. Do I really need to remind all of you Bengal fans?

What can the Tigers Do?
The same could be said about Highlands in many games this year, but with them, you've always got the threat of the pass. The beauty of having an effective passing game, is that you can pick & choose how to deploy it. Regular season against an inferior team, throw it around and work on some things. Tight game in the playoffs, throttle it back and play ball control. Either way, the defense has to respect it. As soon as the safeties begun to suck in, here comes the long ball.
