In my opinion, this is 99.9% true. I can tell you from personal experience, that the SWOL is a whole other world compared to Knothole. It's not that the kids are more naturally athletic than the kids playing Knothole in Ft. Thomas, the game is just played at a much higher level in the SWOL - similar to how football at Highlands is played at a higher level than at other area schools. The kids that are playing SWOL right now, are the same kids who'll be playing against Highlands in a few years, and the level of experience they'll have will be greater than the kids who have only played Knothole. There's just no way around it. Unless you're a super-star style athlete, if you've only played Knothole you can't expect to step in & hit top-level pitching with the same consistency as those who've been facing it for the last 2 or 3 seasons.

Yes football will always be king, but that's not a reason to not have a good baseball program. Working out is working out. As long as the kids are lifting, running, plyometrics, etc, I don't think it matters if they're doing it with the football team or baseball team. Granted, footballers will want to add some mass that may slightly hurt their baseball performance, but NKY is littered with kids who excel at both (Isler at CC, Brake at Conner). Now, missing summer baseball because of football commitments, I can see how that could hurt some. Maybe someone else can elaborate more. And for spring break, I say if the kid doesn't want to stay and play ball, then he doesn't love the sport enough to go 100% when he's there anyway. I try to impress on my kids all the time that you have to make sure to grasp those things in life that are important to you when they're available. They'll have the rest of their lives to lounge on the beach in Florida, but they will NOT have the rest of their lives to play competitive baseball. Go on spring break while you're in college. Play baseball now.:irked: Freshman ball - that can only help, especially given that such a small number of Ft. T kids play in the SWOL, where 90% of the Ryle, Conner, Boone County & Cov Cath kids grow up playing. Maybe it's already in the works, but someone really needs to spearhead an effort to make a freshman team happen next year.

Not to hijack this thread, but it's ridiculous how few scholies baseball is allowed. I forget the #'s off the top of my head, but sports like crew get more!

I know, I know. I almost didn't post anything, but like you said, the rain won't stop. I'm glad it's working for him. Seems like a decent kid.

Two points: 1 - you can't fault parents for sending their kids to better schools, many of which also happen to be bigger. Jones' son appears to be a phenomenal athlete, but for those "tweeners," playing in a better program could mean the difference between getting a scholarship or not, or heck, even having a winning season or not. 2 - Assuming "big picture" means academics also, how does his son benefit from passing on better educations at other local public & private schools? This is not bashing on Bellevue, but the academic opportunities are not on the same level as those availalbe at other local institutions that were available to him.

Amen Brother. Seems to me there is a lot of support for this. What do we need to do to make it happen?

Easiest way to follow them is their website. If you go to the school district's website, go to "Departments," then "Athletics," and then click on the "Baseball" link to the right. They do a good job keeping the site up to date. They've played 5 games since returning from TN. They got hit hard by Scott on the way back, lost to Ryle, beat SK & then lost to CC by 1 in the Doc Morris, and looked like they hit the ball well last night in beating St. Henry. They're off to Cynthiana the next few days for a tourney - open with Brossart today. Maybe someone who's seen more of the games can comment on how they've been playing.

I'm relatively new to this area and only got to see Jared Lorenzen play once, but I've never seen one player dominate a HS football game the way he did when I saw him. His skills and ability were awesome.

They only had two games scheduled down there. Yesterday's game against Pigeon Forge HS was rained out. Nothing on the website about a reschedule yet. They're scheduled to play Gatlinburg-Pittman tomorrow, but no time listed.

I beg to differ. The season opener against Holy Cross had a pretty decent crowd of Highlands fans. The 2 games this last weekend were down, but spring break was already underway. What exactly do you consider a decent crowd at a NKY high school game?

I didn't get there until the 4th, but I saw Sainola hitting the outside corner hard, a Highlands batter get hit in the head by a breaking pitch and somehow not get awarded first base, some untimely errors for B-view, and a really nice opposite field walk-off dinger by Blake Newman. Way to go Birds!

I'm sorry I missed this one. Keep your heads up Bird coaches & players. This sounds like a tough loss, but we know you're working hard and are heading in the right direction!

I guess that's possible, but watching these guys on the football field this past fall, I can't imagine any message delivered would be about effort. Then again, everyone's human.

That would penalize hard work & reward complacency. Not fair at all to the kids who come behind a year or two of strong jr/sr classes.

Too many classes, way too many teams making the playoffs who don't belong there, about one too many games played to get to the championship game. To me the argument is not if the playoffs are watered down, it's whether watered down playoffs are a good idea. For me, the answer is NO.

Congrats to the coaches & players on getting your first win right out of the box! Tough next 4 or 5 games. Hang in there!
