gametime Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I'm hearing he was given the chance to be a preferred walk on at UC, but is still exploring his options. It doesn't sound like he will take that chance, and will look at scholarship opportunities. Just passing it along...
BaseballIsLife Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I'm wondering what kind of scholarship offers he is getting? He had a GREAT senior season and was also invited to Joe Montana's Top 100 QB (in the Nation) camp where he performed very well. Hes produced in the big games all year and taken them over for the good of the team. He has good size, with speed/scramble ability, and has a strong arm from what I've seen. I'm a little surprised that he hasn't garnered any more attention than he has. I wish the best of luck to the young man.
theguru Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I agree, at some point I would think someone would give Tony a scholarship.

Thank goodness for Tony's sake that his dad took him to just about every QB camp in the south this past summer to make him better. You could see the difference it made immediately from receiving some professional instruction from camp teachers. Good luck Tony, something will come..

But does grades and gpa and how one scores on an ACT come into play? I am not saying this is the case here, I have not idea. I know nothing about this young man! So, for those of you in the know, does that keep a kid from getting a scholarship?
DMZ76 Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I don't know much about recruitment and how it all works. But does grades and gpa and how one scores on an ACT come into play? I am not saying this is the case here, I have not idea. I know nothing about this young man! So, for those of you in the know, does that keep a kid from getting a scholarship? No! If you're an absolute stud, schools aren't going to let a little thing like grades get in the way of winning! Seriously, at the D1 level there are minimums. And if you don't meet them...you can go Prep school or JUCO. And then after 1-2 yrs. you can re-recruit for D1 (2 yrs eligibility left). Lower divisions place more emphasis on grades as they form "packages" which include grants. Grades can definitely effect the amount of $$ offered. All that said, Tony G. does not have any problem academically. It's a situation on finding the proper fit of athlete and college. If his heart is set on the big show...he may have to take a circuitous route. Maybe go JUCO and put up big #'s. He's not played a lot of reps. Only started this year and was on the bench most the games (blowouts). But we all saw what he did in the big games. Big time players make big time plays in big time games. (see HHS v. Bryan Station/ 5A State Final/ Border Bowl KY v. TN). Good Luck Tony....MVP, MVP, MVP!! :notworthy:
THEGREENDANDY Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 D-1 schools are stingy when it comes to the "preferred walk-on" spots. Most kids who are considered preferred sometimes are promised a roster spot with a pretty good shot at earning a scholly, at least that is what I have been told:cool:
cch5432 Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 How long has the Guidugli-UC pipeline existed? I know the 3 brothers did, has anyone else?
75center Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 How long has the Guidugli-UC pipeline existed? I know the 3 brothers did, has anyone else? 2-Gino in 2000, then Ben.
cch5432 Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 2-Gino in 2000, then Ben. Yeah, that's what I knew. I didn't know if their father and played at UC or not. I just know that he is huge.
Ram Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I don't know much about recruitment and how it all works. But does grades and gpa and how one scores on an ACT come into play? I am not saying this is the case here, I have not idea. I know nothing about this young man! So, for those of you in the know, does that keep a kid from getting a scholarship? DMZ is correct in his statements. D1, grades are less important, if you meet the minimums and are a stud, you can play. But, in everything else, D1AA, D2, and NAIA, then grades are very important. D1 can not give partial scholarships, they are all or nothing, but D1AA, D2, and NAIA can give partial scholarships and normally do. They will work up a package of football scholarship money, grant money, and academic money and tell you what kind of package you get toward your education. And, if your grades and test scores are not good enough, then you just cut down on the amount of money they can offer you. D3 does not give athletic scholarships, but if you are a good football player and they want you, then they can find you grant money, academic money, and alumni money that you may not have normally gotten if you were not playing football for them. And without the grades and test scores, you will not qualify for that money. D1 schools have 85 scholarships to give, and like I said they are all or nothing. D1AA has 63, what are called equivalents, they can divide them up among 63 players, or they can divide them up among 100 players and they will receive partial scholarships with some academic money mixed in to make a full scholarship. They will get more bang for their 63 scholarships. D2 schools have 36 equivalents, so they have to divide virtually every scholarship up into partial athletic scholarship and partial academic scholarship to get enough players to field a team. NAIA are basically like the D2 schools, they will have to give partial athletic scholarships with a partial academic scholarship to spread their scholarships around to field a team. D3, like I said is all academic money, and alumni money.
gamehuntr Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Tony G would be a nice fit in any D1 offensive system. What a catch if he is still uncommitted, a multi-MVP and national ranking, WOW. Tony throws the deep ball and targets the sticks route very well. And when he scrambles and runs... he runs to score! Good Luck Tony.:thumb:
