Why go to a JUCO and burn a year of eligibility?

 

I have never seen the JUCO route as attractive as the prep school route. You do not burn that year of eligibility and you just fall into the class behind you.

 

It seems to me that Tony G. needs more reps and he could get that at the right prep school while not having his five years to play four eligibility clock starting.

You got me. What exactly is a post-high school, prep school?

Hargrave Military Academy, Fort Union Military Academy, and Milford Prep are three prep schools who place the most players in Division I football.

 

Many players go there after the graduate from high school in a year (or semester) they call a post graduate year. Players are all there for different reasons including:

 

Not academically qualifying; an physically immature kid needing a year to grow; no Division I offers and looking to improve their marketability with the colleges.

 

This year at a post graduate prep school does not count against a player's five years to play four (includes the redshirt year) NCAA rule.

 

It is a very nice alternative and I do not think enough kids go that route.

I thought that the school Tony and Dave were considering, Georgia Military College, is a prep school like Fort Union. Therfore he would not lose collegiate eligibility. Georgia Military a JUCO or Prep?

 

I have a son that is a friend of a Fort Union student who is on the UK team as a Tight End. You are 110% on the mark regarding the difference between JUCO and Prep and their years towards NCAA eligibility... not that I ever doubted your strong opinion!

Georgia Military is a college not a prep school. The college eligibility will start for Tony G. at this school. It will count as one of his four years.

 

Gabe Correll played at Fort Union Military Academy in 2007 after graduating from Anderson High School in Cincinnati. He redshirted last fall at UK. He will be a redshirt freshman this fall even though he graduated from high school in 2007.

 

I personally think this is the right way to go!

So, did he officially sign today?

He did sign today. He also said he could leave Georgia Military College after one year if the right Division I offer came along. Even if he plays there for two seasons, he could participate in spring drills at the Division I school of his choice two years from today provided he attends Georgia Military College this summer and next summer. He could be enrolled in a Division I school in January of 2011. He also said Georgia Military College produced 15 Division I players this year.
