DMZ is correct in his statements. D1, grades are less important, if you meet the minimums and are a stud, you can play. But, in everything else, D1AA, D2, and NAIA, then grades are very important. D1 can not give partial scholarships, they are all or nothing, but D1AA, D2, and NAIA can give partial scholarships and normally do. They will work up a package of football scholarship money, grant money, and academic money and tell you what kind of package you get toward your education. And, if your grades and test scores are not good enough, then you just cut down on the amount of money they can offer you.

 

D3 does not give athletic scholarships, but if you are a good football player and they want you, then they can find you grant money, academic money, and alumni money that you may not have normally gotten if you were not playing football for them. And without the grades and test scores, you will not qualify for that money.

 

D1 schools have 85 scholarships to give, and like I said they are all or nothing.

 

D1AA has 63, what are called equivalents, they can divide them up among 63 players, or they can divide them up among 100 players and they will receive partial scholarships with some academic money mixed in to make a full scholarship. They will get more bang for their 63 scholarships.

 

D2 schools have 36 equivalents, so they have to divide virtually every scholarship up into partial athletic scholarship and partial academic scholarship to get enough players to field a team.

 

NAIA are basically like the D2 schools, they will have to give partial athletic scholarships with a partial academic scholarship to spread their scholarships around to field a team.

 

D3, like I said is all academic money, and alumni money.

 

Nailed it from my experiences...

 

Grades will open numerous doors for an athlete at the D1 - Non BCS and at the D2 and NAIA schools. If the grades are not sufficient, then there is a price to pay to be able to attend and play at these prestigious schools.

I like the JUCO route for a player like this...one that has not had the playing time.........Give yourself 2 more years to earn the bigtime scholarship rather than fight to earn a 4th string spot. But his dad will know much more than the rest of us as far as gettign him in the right place. Good luck Tony!!!!!

Tony is a stud athlete. I'm sure he will play at the next level. One things for sure he has been taught how to win and expects it.

I watch Tony Guidugli in the JC playoff game he is a fine Qb and a great find for any D1 school.

Very interesting to hear him rattle off all the N Kentucky coaches that he knows and many of the local athletes from years gone by! Obviously... a class act. I wish him well. :thumb:
