Outstanding pitching performances by Nutini of CovCath (2 Hitter) and Head of HHS (complete game) and anther great outing for sophomore Adam Shumate who comes in to pitch the top of the seventh inning to preserve the CovCath victory.

BTW there were a minimum of at least four or five MLB scouts at the game watching....

Stats and other information after I eat supper....

Outstanding game with both team pitchers controlling the game on a beautiful day for baseball at CovCath. Nutini and Head were masterful as they kept each team hitters at bay and when runners did get on base Maile and Leggett threw them out if they tried to steal. Maile through out the one HHS runner who tried to steal on him and Leggett was successful on two out of the three runners from CovCath who tried stealing on him.

Both hits for HHS were by Rizzo a single in the 4th and a single in the 6th but Nutini did not walk a batter today.

CovCath had five hits and Head HBP three CovCath batters. He did walk two and the one run that scored (as it always seems to do in baseball) was a walk, that came back to beat him.

CovCath blew two chance to score once in the 2nd inning and again in the 4th by just bad baseball.

The good: Nutini and Shumate combining for a two hit shoutout, Lafever coming up big time in the sixth with two outs and Siemer going two for three.

The bad: Some bad base running.

The ugly: Really nothing in this exciting game.

The stars of the game besides Nutini and Shumate for CovCath was LF Brandon Lefever who with two outs and CovCath runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth, sent a 1-2 pitch on a line out to left field to knock in the winning run and the only run of the game.

This was a game that neither team deserved to lose and it was indeed a great game to watch.

Nutini 3 PA 1 HBP

Siemer 3 PA 2 Hits 1 K and was caught stealing

Maile 3 PA 1 FC 1 BB 1 run scored and caught stealing

Darner 3 PA reached base E-9 1 hit

Isler 3 PA 1 SF 1 BB 1 HBP

Holocher 1 HBP stolen base

Lafever 3 PA 1 hit 1 rbi

Eggemeier 3 PA

Warning 2 PA 1 hit

Nutini 6 complete innings 77 pitches 2 hits 0 runs 0 W and 5 K's

Shumate 1 complete inning 7 pitches 0 hits 0 runs 0 W and 1 K

CovCath is now 3-0 on the season and plays Newport Central Catholic on Wednesday April 1 @ 5pm at CovCath

There are only a couple things to really say. The first is, it might be getting time to look at other options for Holocher as a hitter. Move him down, DH for him, something of that sort. Eggemeier AND Lafever should be ahead of him. The second is Nutini pitched really well, and with him and Isler pitching, Covcath has to be confident, but it helps your pitchers none if you can't hit the ball and really CovCath still isn't hitting very well. It's time to pick it up. Third, why steal Maile with Darner and Isler coming up. Just not smart...let them get you around, they are good enough hitters to do so. That's twice Maile has gotten thrown out in three games, so why not let your strongest hitters move the runner.

Also, great to see Lafever produce in that pressure situation!

Rizzo 3 PA 2 hits

Daley 3 PA 1 K 1 fc and 1 sac

Head 3 PA and 1 W

Sainola 3 PA reached base E-1 and 1 K

Liggett 3 PA

Rosenhegen 3 PA 1 K and reached base E-3

Newman 3 PA 2 K's 1 fc

White 2 PA 1 K

Gold 2 PA

Head 7 complete innings 83 pitches 5 hits 1 run 1 er 2 W's 1 K 3 HBP

BTW I made a mistake, as Nutini did have 1 BB

So how many times are CovCath and Highlands going to play this year? Anymore regular season games?

Not that I am aware of. The game on Friday was played due to the rain outs that both teams suffered early in the week, and both coaches wanted to play and the field at CovCath was in good enough shape to play on. Today's game was the regular schedule game.

Shumate comes in and throws another good inning. It's a little early but is he the wild card that no one was expecting that could separate CovCath from the pack in the 9th?

Could be. Pitching is going to be the strength of this team.

Look at the recent past history at CovCath and you will see guy's coming in as tenth graders and doing great such as Josh Bleser and Isler. Could Shumate be one like that? Two games and 2 1/3 innings is a bit too early to say one way or the other but I like what I see. The kids has guts....

Maile/Darner/Isler combine for about 2 hits in 2 games and they still win. HHS has to be happy with the pitching performance of both Bird and Head.

I'm far more impressed with Head. But I also think it looks good for CovCath. If they still win with their three top hitters not hitting close to what we know their capable of, then when they DO start to hit...

I'm sorry I missed this one.

Keep your heads up Bird coaches & players. This sounds like a tough loss, but we know you're working hard and are heading in the right direction!

They also stated an interest in seeing Sainola pitch.

I believe Adam is Greg's son, correct? Good lordy if so, Greg will be tough to be around for the next couple of years. :D I'm surprised I haven't already received a phone call from him gloating about his son's pitching against the Birds. Just kidding Greg. :thumb:

I passed out rosters of the CovCath team to the scouts, and told them I had a roster of HHS but only had my one copy but if they needed a name all they had to do was ask. Well in about the fourth or fifth inning I had one of them come up and ask for the name of #25 from HHS (Liggett) and he also asked me what I thought of him.

From what I have heard, a lot of MLB scouts will be coming to the CovCath games this season, and that can only help the CovCath players and the teams they are playing.
