CovCath's Maile a standout

When most fans talk about Covington Catholic High School standout catcher Luke Maile, it's usually about how good a hitter he is, which he is, but after watching him on Saturday against Scott it was his defense that impressed the most.

By my count, Maile blocked at least seven pitches that bounced in the dirt that kept runners from taking an extra base and not once did he allow a wild pitch or a passed ball.

He also made a spectacular play to get CovCath out of the second inning. With a runner on first base and one out, Maile hung on to a foul tipped third strike to record one out and then sprang from his crouch and fired a bullet to first where he caught the runner flat-footed. The runner was eventually tagged out in a rundown.

Maile had one minor mental lapse when he thought a runner was stealing second and promptly fired a throw into center field, because no one was covering, but the throw was so quick and thrown with such velocity that it was returned to the infield before the runner could actually take second.

So maybe I am not the only baseball fan, that thinks Maile will be catching at UK next year....
