JBCousins Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 In another thread it was mentioned that 10 or 11 of the state's top 15 teams have been eliminated. Do you think the regional tournament needs to be changed? Or the sub-regional or state tournament? Baseball is a very different game in a tournament setting than football, basketball, softball, or any other sport. I know time would not permit it but I love the way college baseball does its tournaments--double elimination, best-of-3, double elimination, and best-of-3.
Old School Dawg Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 I would think that they would have to shorten the season at least a week and with the rain situations some teams might not get many games in.

justsports Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 No, that's what makes high school baseball fun IMO.
tdyballgame Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 And makes it fair IMO. Some teams are able to load up on players and others can't. But most teams will have at least one really good pitcher that can win a game and if the team plays their cards right, then who knows what can happen.
gchs_uk9 Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 (1) Make the district tournaments double elimination. Only the winning team advances, which means four teams would move on to the regional tournament. (2) The regional tournament (four teams) would then be double elimination. Winner would move on to the sectional tournament. (3) The sectional tournament (four teams; 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13-16) would also be double elimination. You could perhaps hold those tournaments at Western, Louisville, UK, and Morehead, or other quality stadiums. (4) The state tournament (four teams) would be a double elimination tournament. Two games on Friday night, three on Saturday, then one final game (perhaps two, if necessary) on Sunday afternoon.

insertnamehere Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Sounds good. Double elimination for everything. We'll just have to push the state finals back to mid-July.
Clyde Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Sounds good. Double elimination for everything. We'll just have to push the state finals back to mid-July. Sure. Bring up the obvious problem. Seriously, the length of the tourney is the problem with trying to "make it fair."
gchs_uk9 Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Sounds good. Double elimination for everything. We'll just have to push the state finals back to mid-July. Using this year's calendar... 1. All districts are three, four, or five teams. They could be held May 18-22. 2. Regional tournaments could be May 25-29 3. Sectional tournaments could be June 5-7 4. State tournament would be 12-14 Or, to be more precise, the exact same schedule as this year. Remember, while it would be double elimination, you are eliminating more teams in the earlier rounds. Current regional tournaments are seven games; double elimination tournaments would be either six or seven games.

I like it also...but they would definitely have to shorten the regular season by at least 5+ games or by the first week of May, otherwise they would be playing well into the start of summer. That surely wouldn't make many of the summer travel teams very happy.

I've never understood why the district runner up advances to the regional in either baseball or basketball. IMO it makes the district championship rather meaningless.

gchs_uk9 Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Looking at my schedule, outside of longer district tournaments how is this any different than the current setup as it pertains to the number of games?
