Clyde Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Coach Baioni is stepping up next year and scheduling a lot of strong teams. LexCath Male Paintsville Cincy X Oak Hils Owensboro Catholic Pigeon Forge TN (TN semi-finalists) PRP tourney Fayette County tourney Should be good baseball to watch.
cooperstown Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Will they have the type of team that can compete on a regular basis against that level of competition (plus their regular 9th region opponents)? They lose quite a bit of pitching, don't they? Certainly applaud him for putting together that type of schedule, though. You only get better playing the best competition you can find.
ft bronc Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I like it! :ylsuper: Smart football teams that are trying to raise the level of their program play teams like Highlands to let their kids see how the best perform. I don't see why Highlands baseball program shouldn't do the same in their quest to move upward. Heck, they already play Cov Cath, Beechwood, Conner...
The Great Game Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Coach Baioni is stepping up next year and scheduling a lot of strong teams. LexCath Male Paintsville Cincy X Oak Hils Owensboro Catholic Pigeon Forge TN (TN semi-finalists) PRP tourney Fayette County tourney Should be good baseball to watch. Looks like the Roesel school of thought... his belief is that you can't begin to compete at tournament time if you haven't played a tough schedule during the regular season. If you look at Ryle's schedule the last couple of years you will see that they played probably the most difficult schedule in the 9th.
goallout25 Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 I also like this a lot. However, there is a fine line to walk between scheduling tough opponents to prepare your team for tournament time and teaching your teams how to win. I'm not sure what Coach Baioni has returning, so I cannot speak to their level of being able to compete with those teams. I just know, for a fact, that while it is beneficial to schedule competitive teams (for reasons of being ready for postseason and also seeing what it takes to be a top notch high school program), there is also something to be said for winning games and making sure that the players are not getting so frustrated with losing. Because sometimes it doesn't matter if you are playing the top teams in the state day in and day out, losing will sometimes be able to take its toll on players. So if Coach Baioni is able to keep his teams spirits up (which I believe he is the type who can) or his team is able to compete and win some games while competing against a tough schedule or he has a healthy mix of winnable vs. challenging games, then I believe this to be a very wise strategy in the long run.

Ryle seems to do well in post-season play because of their tough schedule during the regular season. I wouldn't say they had the toughest schedule in NKY last year, but def one of them. I also have to question if this may be a bit TOO ambitious. I don't know, maybe not.

I sure thought so for Ryle in looking at the schedules in both 2008 and 2009. It didn't work out in 2008, but in 2009 I think the tough schedule and being able to compete with the best teams in the 9th, Louisville, and Lexington gave a younger team the confidence to win a extremely tough 33rd District.

This, I believe, is the key. Competing against the best teams is one thing for confidence, but getting blown out by the best teams, in my opinion, can be detrimental to confidence.

hawkeye Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Who will pitch other than Watson and Dill? Who is promising coming up from JV?
katbird Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Who will pitch other than Watson and Dill? Who is promising coming up from JV? Roller and Bardo....:banana::banana::D Just wishful thinking.
gamer31 Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 That'd be nice! Throw in Collinsworth roaming center field and they may have something!
FamilyTradition Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Roller and Bardo....:banana::banana::D Just wishful thinking. I heard that Roller maybe is considering trying out this year. Hasn't played in a while but still loves the game. Will have to wait to see.
extackler Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Who will pitch other than Watson and Dill? Who is promising coming up from JV? I know one pitcher that's coming back after a few years away because of football. He's "not" a household name, but was the best pitcher on the JV squad as a Freshman.
