I know one pitcher that's coming back after a few years away because of football. He's "not" a household name, but was the best pitcher on the JV squad as a Freshman.

Nice, have to clear some afternoons to get up to Highlands park this spring.

Any word on the frosh coach? I have heard that there will be a number of

8th graders and some 7th graders that will be trying out.

Freshma coach is Kip Mason.

 

Last I heard Roller was going to concentrate on conditioning for football.

JB is the type of coach that can handle a tough schedule. He talks about fundamentals, playing 100+%, and waking up to play another day. He has the mentality to keep the spirits high and sale the boys on their body of work throughout the season. He is even keel and bleeds baseball. As far as the frosh, I agree with others there is a lot of talent coming through the middle school currently in all sports. I know that some will begin to concentrate; but I am old school and like all 3 sports. I think keeping the boys interested in the younger grades and getting that H on a high school jersey first will help. The frosh program and starting early is the key. I think it will pay dividends in baseball just like it has in 6th grade basketball another thread.

I know there are currently 6 Freshman who played Div. I A ball last year that are planning on trying out(Div.1 A Champs as 8th graders) . Out of the 6 Freshman 2 will probably play JV. The future does look good for baseball. I just hope they stick with it.

There are also a couple other kids who played SWOL last year that have already faced some of the kids who will be pitching for the frosh teams from Kenton & Boone counties this year - as well as other pitchers like them.

This week, the Highlands baseball team opens its season against three of the top teams in Northern Kentucky (Boone County, Conner and Beechwood) and two of the top teams in Louisville (Male and Pleasure Ridge Park). And the Bluebirds are just getting warmed up.

 

"As a coaching staff, we knew this is what we're going to do," said Highlands coach Jeremy Baioni. "It's not going to hurt anything to put these teams on the schedule. The guys understand what we're trying to do.

 

"We want to bring them all on. We don't want to be an average baseball program. We want to be like the football program."
