What an interesting week that was. We had a couple of statement wins and a showdown between Lexington’s best 2 quarterbacks. There were several eye popping stat lines around the area. Here is where we stand after week 6.

The top 10:

1. Boyle County (4A, 6-0, RPI .731)

In the preseason rankings it was said that Boyle’s run through the “gauntlet” portion of their schedule could propel them to number one depending on the outcomes. Beating CAL 71-28 and blanking Highlands 30-0 is enough so far to do just that. Even though Frederick Douglass beat Scott County, the eye test has me putting Boyle over Douglass as the slightly better team.

Last week: A week after the Boyle Offense stole the show, the defense was the dominant side of the ball in the 30-0 win over 5A Highlands. The Bluebirds were only able to get 85 yards of total offense. Andrew Sacco led the D in tackles from his LB spot with 10 tackles and a sack. Wilson Kelly added 8 tackles of his own but was in the backfield causing problems on what seemed like every play. Offensively Boyle had their struggles thanks to a very good Highlands defense but wore down the Birds and were able to score 17 points in the 4th quarter to put the game out of reach.

This Week: Boyle will get to rest up as they prepare to start district play.

2. Frederick Douglass (5A, 6-0, RPI .698)

Last week: The Broncos D came up with their 5th and most impressive shutout of the season so far in the defeat of Scott County 36-0. Douglass has struggled to have success against the Cardinals in their short history as a program losing 3 of 4 but Friday night Douglass showed that they are ready to take that next step. They will most likely have to beat Scott County once more in the playoffs to end the chatter of not being able to win when it matters most.

This Week: Frederick Douglass hits the road to take on Grant County (5A, 3-3). The Braves are coming off of a 48-16 loss to Montgomery County, a team not near the caliber of Frederick Douglass.

3. Scott County (5A, 5-1, RPI .649)

Last week: Other than a drive that got to the 1 or 2 yard line, the potent Cardinal rushing attack was kept under wraps gaining just 100 yards on the night as Scott County fell to Frederick Douglass 36-0. Scott County will have some time to make some adjustments and improve before the probable rematch with Douglass in the playoffs.

This Week: Scott County travels to Northern Kentucky to take on 6A Ryle (3-3). Ryle is looking to bounce back from back to back losses to Highlands and Cincinnati Elder.

4. Franklin County (4A, 6-0, RPI .757)

Last week: The Flyers were able to hold the Shelby County option attack to just 7 points in their 27-7 win. Defensively Franklin County was led by Brenton Sears who had 26 tackles and Brady Holleran with 20 tackles and a sack. 6 weeks into the season Franklin County currently holds the top spot in the 4A RPI Rankings.

This Week: Franklin County will host struggling North Oldham (4A, 1-5). The Mustangs are fresh off a 54-0 loss to Waggener. Should be an easier night for the Flyers.

5. Lexington Christian Academy (2A, 5-1, RPI .766)

Last week: The Williamsburg air raid was not able to keep up with the offensive attack of LCA. The Eagles handled Williamsburg 55-21. The duo of Jayden Barnhardt and DeAirious Smith shined Friday night. Barnhardt was 15/19 for 342 yards and 4 scores while adding another 60 yards and a score on the ground. Smith caught 8 passes for 245 yards and 3 TDs. LCA is making a strong case to be considered the #1 team in 2A.

This week: LCA will have their BYE week as they prepare to enter district play.

6. Lexington Catholic (4A, 4-2, RPI .694)

Last week: Tates Creek raced out to a quick 36-7 first quarter lead before the Knights mounted a furious comeback coming away with the 54-50 win. If you want to watch an offensive clinic go to Prepspin and watch the bonus coverage of this game. Per the usual Beau Allen put up an impressive stat line passing for 464 yards and 6 TDs while adding another score on the ground. Allen did throw his first couple interceptions of the season. His leading receiver was Jackson Corbett with 11 receptions 132 yards and 3 TDs.

This Week. Catholic will enjoy their Bye week before starting district play against rival Boyle County.

7. Mercer County (3A, 5-1, RPI .737)

Last Week: The Titans came away with a big district win beating CAL on the road 45-42. RB Malachi Yulee led the ground attack rushing for 178 yards and 3 scores on 13 carries. Brayden Dunn added another 84 yards rushing on 14 carries. Defensively Bryce Walton led Mercer with 12 tackles. The Titans are starting to turn some heads and are climbing the rankings in 3A.

This Week: Mercer will take on Western Hills (3A, 2-3). The Wolverines have won their last 2 games after a 0-3 start.

8. Taylor County (3A, 4-2, RPI .594)

Last week: Taylor County ran wild all over Casey County winning 49-7. The ground game was not slowed down all night led by RB Wes Oliver who had, are you ready..........369 yards and 4 TDs on 18 carries. Tre Goodin added another 228 yards and 3 TDs on 18 carries of his own.

This week: Taylor County will host Hart County (3A, 3-3). Hart County is coming off of back to back losses to Glasgow and Adair County.

9. Campbellsville (A, 4-2, RPI .571)

Last week: Campbellsville rolled to a 50-8 win over Fort Knox. QB Arren hash completed 3 passes for 91 yards and 3 TDs. One would assume that’s probably a perfect passer rating. Reggie Thomas led the Eagles in rushing with 137 yards on 6 carries.

This Week: Campbellsville will travel to Metcalfe County (2A, 1-5). The hornets lost to Clinton County last week 35-0.

10. Anderson County (4A, 4-2, RPI .672)

Last week: After back to back losses in weeks 3 & 4, Anderson County has rebounded to win 2 consecutive games moving them back into the top 10. The Bearcats beat a solid Lincoln County team 28-14. RB Zach Labhart led the offense with 149 yards and a TD on 18 carries. QB Jagger Gillis threw for 107 yards and 2 scores and ran for 72 yards and a TD.

This week: like district foes Boyle County and Lexington Catholic, Anderson County will have a bye before starting district play.

The next 5, 11-15

11. East Jessamine (5A, 4-2, RPI .561)

Last week: District and County rival West Jessamine was no match for the Jaguars as they rolled to a 55-18 victory. East racked up 445 yards of rushing offense led by Valdon Miles who had 164 of those yards and 2 scores. Dylan Moore had 137 yards of his own and 2 scores as well. Cameron Segar led the team defensively with 12 tackles and a sack.

This week: District play continues as East will host Madison Southern (3-3). Southern is coming off of a narrow 28-27 win over Collins.

12. LaRue County (3A, 3-3, RPI .527)

Last week: The Hawks continue their up and down season with a 42-0 defeat to Bardstown. Every time LaRue puts together a good game or two they follow with a disappointing loss. Bardstown is a very good team so the loss isn’t the shocker but getting rolled by 42 is. LaRue couldn’t get the offense rolling as they only had 116 yards.

This week: LaRue should get back on track hosting a winless Thomas Nelson team in a district matchup.

13. Tates Creek (6A, 2-4, RPI .463)

Last Week: Creek jumped all over Lexington Catholic racing out to a 36-7 lead but couldn’t sustain the momentum eventually falling 54-50. Tates Creek showed what it’s potential could be in the first quarter. If they could do that for 4 quarters they would be a dangerous team. QB Luke Duby had a night to remember passing for 535 yards and 7 TDs and ran for another 89 yards giving him over 600 yards on the night. His favorite target was Miles Thomas who caught 12 passes for 281 yards and 3 TDs.

This week: Tates Creek will recover from the shootout with Catholic with a Bye week.

14. Henry Clay (6A, 0-5, RPI .405)

Last week: Henry Clay remains winless after falling to 6A Central Hardin 38-16. QB DJ VanHorn continues to be the source of almost all the offense as he threw for 121 yards and ran for 159 yards with 2 TDs. Henry Clay remains in the top 15 even though they have yet to win largely because they have played a very tough schedule that many teams would be winless against.

This week: A good opportunity for the Devils to get their first win comes this week as they take on Bryan Station (6A, 1-4).

15. George Rogers Clark (6A, 2-3, RPI .406)

Last week: GRC was no match for Louisville Ballard losing 55-14. RB Azariah Israel was limited to 90 yards on 19 carries as GRC was only able to accumulate 165 yards.

This week: 5A Cooper (3-3) will make the trip from Northern Kentucky. Cooper is coming off of back to back bad losses to Cov Cath and DeSales.

16. Madison Southern (5A, 3-3, RPI .451) Last week- W 28-27 vs Collins. This week at 5A East Jessamine

17. Lincoln County (4A, 3-3, RPI .527) Last week- L 28-14 vs Anderson County. This week- BYE

18. Woodford County (5A, 3-2, RPI .566) Last week- BYE This week- vs 5A West Jessamine.

19. Washington County (2A, 4-2, RPI .675) Last week- W 40-6 vs Thomas Nelson. This week- BYE

20. Dunbar (6A, 3-3, RPI .434) Last Week- W 35-6 vs Great Crossing. This week- BYE

Teams on the rise

1. Mercer County- The Titans have bounced back from their loss to Boyle with a big win over Garrard County and a district road win vs CAL.

2. Anderson County- The Bearcats have won back to back games against solid opponents after losses to Mercer and Franklin counties.

Teams on the decline

1. Bryan Station- Station is 0-3 versus Fayette County schools so far this season. Outside of a win vs West Jessamine the Defenders are in danger of not winning another game this season.

2. West Jessamine- speaking of the Colts, they are not known to be a football powerhouse by any means but last season they were competitive in most of their games en route to a 4-7 season. This year they are in serious danger of going 0 fer on the season. Best chance for a win looks to be at Collins later in the season.

Frederick Douglass 36 Scott County 0

Douglass made a statement pitching a shoutout against the Cardinals. Other than an early drive inside the 5 yard line, Scott County was completely out of sorts offensively. Frederick Douglass was able to out gain the Cardinals 428-217.

#11 East Jessamine vs #16 Madison Southern

In a district matchup between two top 20 central Kentucky opponents draws the most intrigue in a week filled with Byes and lackluster district matchups. East will bring the two headed rushing attack of Dylan Moore and Valdon Miles up against the balanced attack of QB Tobias Storm (901 yards, 9 TD), RB Adrian Jones (529 yards, 6 TD) and WR Walt Smith (523 yards, 6 TD).

My first memory of HS football was at Lafayette in the late 60's. We went to Boyle in 1969, then Mercer in 1974. Central KY HS football is special. Thank you for doing this.
