Anyone ever heard of Herbie Phelps?

The Best is Alexander, the best that never was is Justin Frisk. I played against both and I'm on record as saying for a highschool back I thought Frisk was better. He was an amazing combination of every talent you'd want out of a running back.

 

On a side note did someone really bring up Kip Mason's name in this thread?? :lol:

It was cracked when it was moved from spot to another in front of the Courthouse in Greenup. Don scored 72 points in a game for McKell High School.

It sounds like you are a football junkie----which is good. If I'm not mistaken, he went to school in Bardstown but it was at "Old Kentucky Home" or something like that. I think for many years he held the state scoring record.

When it comes to never was Eddie Bane from Holmes in the late 90's was a guy who had a lot of looks that never got to play in college.

McBroom was a WR, Tim Phillips would be my vote from Trinity if anyone.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought he was a slot back that played in and out of the backfield. I just see him vs that Male pressure D catching the wheel down the sideline from Brohm. He was a great ball player.

I think from this thread it looks like Alexander+Frisk. Frisk is the best I saw in high school. Shelton was the best specimen.

Since none of the Blueboys have been mentioned. I will throw another great out there in Jerry Madden of CovCath. That kid could be the second greatest running back to ever play for CovCath. He holds all of their records and he was a RB that was just really hard to tackle. :thumb:

Ed Ziegler, NewCath '66. Rushed for 1500 yards in 10 games while playing in the GCL when Bacon and Purcell were still in the south and very, very good. (Think about that, 150 yds/game playing 7 GCL opponents.) Signed w/ the defending National Champion Fighting Irish. Two year starter. Now a nationally recognized Evironmental Law professor and writer in Denver.

This guy was UNBELIEVABLE back in the day. Was 6'1" and 215 lbs. Ran with power and speed. Just got his National Championship ring from ND in a ceremony honoring their 66 National Champs team. He was a freshman then and frosh couldn't play or travel with the team. BTW, he is actually an INTERNATIONALLY known Zoning and Planning attorney traveling abroad often and lecturing and consulting. Went to UK law school after a brief stint as a NY Giant. Interesting fellow to say the least.

I just wanted to add this about Jeremy Simpson since this thread evolved into 'most dominating rb's in Ky history' as opposed to the most dominating rb in Ky history' which I think we all know is Shaun Alexander.

 

Jeremy was MAYBE 5'9 and 175 with rocks in his pockets dripping wet. Might have run a 4.7 with a breeze behind him. However, HE WAS so strong and had GREAT balance. Talking about a kid his size...315-330 bench...500 Dead Lift...400+ squat. In '93..the year he won Mr. Football and Lincoln County got beat by CovCath 28-13 in the 3A Finals and Jeremy ran for 3,053 yards and 48 TD's. Like Jude and Wales..had Marty Jaggers left him in during some of the blowouts, he'd have rushed for 4,000 that year. He got better as the game went on...he looked better on his 25th and 30th carry than he did his 5th or 10th. The state semis were at Warren Central that year and WC had Lincoln down at half. Anyway..it was a cold, drizzly (ended up being freezing rain night) and Jeremy had rushed for maybe 50 yards in the 1st half. It was one of the ONLY times Jaggers got on Jeremy. Jaggers told him something like.."Jeremy..son. All of these people down here in Western KY have come to see just how good you are. To see if your for real or all hype...right now, you're hype." Jaggers went on to tell him how his old WKU buddies still living in BG had come to see him...how his family in wky had come to see him...and that right now, he was making him look like he was blowing smoke up their butts about him. The 2nd half came and Jeremy rushed for almost 250 in that half alone.

He ended up going to what was then, Cumberland College...WKU and EKU thought he was too small and slow. Went to Cumberland and his best year was actually his freshman year..I want to say he went for close to 1,000? The years that followed, he fell further back with the new talent they were bringing in.

 

He was something special...very special..

I may be wrong but didn't Paul Hornung play high school ball in KY. With that being said, I've watched Micheal West who is #5 on the all-time rushing yards list and JJ Jude who is #1 on the all-time list play and they were both amazing to watch. JJ is definitely the more powerful of the two and West was slightly faster. However when you talk about total package and truly "dominating" RB's i just don't know that i could pick either of them or the others that have been mentioned on this thread ahead of Alexander. Alexander was a beast and super fast. The total package and played good competition. I should be picking Micheal West or JJ Jude without hesitating but i never got to watch Alexander in person and the people that have seen all three in person don't hesitate to give the the edge to Alexander. You really can't argue with them?

 

Statistics are great but they've never won a single game.....:idunno:

Hornung played at Flaget, a now closed school in Louisville. He was not a RB in high school and college, he was a QB.
