Fair or foul has nothing to do with the fact that it was scalded. You said he wasn't hit hard. Leake wasn't fooling anyone that last inning. With a rested pen no reason to run him back out there, his high pitch count for the year was 114--no way he was finishing the inning. The pen was rested.

Does that take away the fact that the ball was hard hit?

No hindsight on my part. Ask spindoc what I texted him in the 7th inning of last night's game from the ballpark.

The only guy Leake got out was the pitcher in that inning.

Leake was done. Management is always talking about keeping his innings down, but Dusty runs him back out in the 7th when he's already at 103 pitches. Dusty has no clue when to take out a pitcher.

Once again Dusty Baker showed everyone just what he knows about handling a pitching staff/in game pitching decisions............Nothing !!!

Dusty should never have started that inning with Leake. The kid had pitched another good game but he was done. Leake was already over 100 pitches. Leake was obviously tired and once again a very good outing was shot.

If Dusty starts the inning with a reliever and the Mets pound the reliever like they did tonight. Most of you all would be saying, how could he not at least send Leake out to start the inning. Especially since the Mets had their pitcher leading off. At that point Leake was shutting them down, and they had their pitcher leading off. You all would have not let him hear the end of it, if he did start someone else that inning and the samething happened. I agree with most of the Baker bashing you all have done, but this Dusty was in a lose/lose with you all if it didn't work.

Wrong. Anybody with any baseball sense would have known that Leake had reached his limit.

Maybe we should just give Dusty a break here. I guess it's possible he thought the pitch count was at 83.

No, you're making assumptions about me and LCRW that are not true. If the pen would have blown it then it would have been on the relievers. Leake was over 100 pitches and kept looking into the dugout before the inning and really wasn't warming up because he thought he was coming out. If the pen had been used up or if Leake were at 85 pitches I could see leaving him. However, he was within 11 pitches of his season high, was pitching on a very hot day and was gassed. That the pitcher was up had nothing to do with it. It wasn't like Leake was out there with a 5 run lead, it was a 1 run game--you don't leave a young pitcher out there and let him end up getting the loss after a nice performance like that, especially with the pen rested.
