June 29, 201115 yr Volquez should continue to get better as the year goes on. That is usually how it works as pitchers return from TJ surgery. Control is the last thing that comes back. Exactly.
June 29, 201115 yr Also, it's another plank for the argument of having some patience with Volquez and the starting rotation. Some people here were ready to throw Volquez to the wolves a few weeks ago. And some wanted Gomes thrown to the lions.
June 29, 201115 yr And some wanted Gomes thrown to the lions. Gomes has a role on a major league team ... it just isn't as an everyday player. One of a manager's biggest jobs to put his players in the best position to be successful and not ask them to do too much. Dusty and the Reds were asking a bit much of Gomes.
June 29, 201115 yr Also, it's another plank for the argument of having some patience with Volquez and the starting rotation. Some people here were ready to throw Volquez to the wolves a few weeks ago. And some wanted Gomes thrown to the lions. I posted the below in another thread where we were discussing negativity of Reds fans ... Stubbs - people wanted him sent down last year, don't want him leading off, etc. Phillips - several issues with effort that caused people to want him benched, severely disciplined or traded Rolen - he is done according to most and needs to be replaced Gomes - improving LF has been the core of debates all year Janish/Renteria - enough said Bruce - Like Stubbs, a lot of fans said he should be sent to the minors. Soon after that he became the Reds hottest hitter and led them to the Division title. Bailey - many have wanted him trade every year over the last 3 years Volquez - ripped by most throughout the season Cordero - need I say more about him? Not much complaining this year though, is there? I am sure I could go on but those are the leading targets. Not much left is there?
June 29, 201115 yr '10: Reds 46-35...runs scored 391/runs allowed 351...differential +40 '11: Reds 41-40...runs scored 401/runs allowed 361...differential +40 The real difference? Not winning the close games. Plain and simple... Incredible numbers right there.
June 30, 201115 yr - Johnny Damon tied Teddy Ballgame for 71st on the all time hit list with 2,654. Too bad, Damon never shot down as many enemy planes as Williams did. - Shields hung a curve ball to Hanigan and gave up that 2-0 single to Lewis; otherwise he pitched pretty well. He and Price struck out 22 in the last 2 games. - Monday night, Rays TV had a poll on who was the greatest Red. The options were Frank Robinson, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez, Barry Larkin, and Pete Rose. Pete took 71% of the votes.
June 30, 201115 yr Interesting doings with the Cardinals ... Chris Carpenter, every Reds' fans favorite whipping boy, has pitched very well (2-1, 2.25 ERA) in his last three starts, probably his best stretch of the year. The kicker ... his pitch counts in the last three games are 124, 124 and 132. Sounds like the Cardinals don't plan on exercising that $15 million option on him for next season.

Not for his on-the-field performance, but I don't know how many times I've heard Reds fans rip on him, questioning his sexuality. It's a shame. Don't know why you just can't cheer for the team. All the complaining isn't going to change anything anyway.
June 30, 201115 yr Phils starting pitchers will finish June with a combined 1.96 ERA. First time since 92 a team's starters have gone below 2.00 for a month.
July 1, 201115 yr Phils starting pitchers will finish June with a combined 1.96 ERA. First time since 92 a team's starters have gone below 2.00 for a month. It sure helps that Lee has tossed four shutouts.
July 2, 201115 yr Pretty bad showing for a sorry Red's offense versus a guy with a near 7 era and the wiffle ball pitcher had one of those bad nights.
July 2, 201115 yr Justin Masterson, who pitched last night for Cleveland and he ended the game with a 2.85 ERA.
July 2, 201115 yr Glad to see Arroyo finally have his annual blowout game ... now he is ready to go on one of his month or more runs of good pitching, right?
