Too bad, Damon never shot down as many enemy planes as Williams did. - Shields hung a curve ball to Hanigan and gave up that 2-0 single to Lewis; otherwise he pitched pretty well. He and Price struck out 22 in the last 2 games. - Monday night, Rays TV had a poll on who was the greatest Red. The options were Frank Robinson, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez, Barry Larkin, and Pete Rose. Pete took 71% of the votes. I thought he would have won... but 71 % is strong

His ERA is 5.49 and he's given up 24 homers already. He's had more than one blowout game. I don't think you're going to see Arroyo at full strength this season. He has an outside shot of tying or breaking Bert Blyleven's single season record of 50 homers allowed in a season.

The one where they went 3-3, the pitchers didn't hit, they scored 4 or less half the time, and only scored above 5 once? Did I mention the pitchers never batted? Why doesn't that help the argument?

However, neither is the pitching as evidenced by the fact that they are 14th in the league in ERA, 15th in walks and 15th in homers allowed. Being next to last in walks and homers allowed is a dangerous combination. This team is simply a .500 team right now. Neither the offense nor the pitching is consistant enough for them to go on a 15-5 stretch. It is the little things that are doing them in. The Reds are 15th in errors and 2nd in caught stealing. Those are the little things that get you beat in close games--which is what is really hurting them right now. Sure, the pitching has been better lately but it is still only average. If you want to really see the problem look at the one run games. In one run games the Reds are 12-17, in blowouts (a margin of 5+ runs) they are 15-10. It has been the inablility of the whole club to produce in tight spots that has led to a barely .500 record. At least they are in a bad division and still in the race.

I agree, but there were people a couple weeks ago claiming the offense isn't an issue. Clearly they've scored runs this year. People fail to realize how often they don't score very much though. This team isn't built to do dominate you with their arms. They're built to get quality starts to decent starts and outscore you.

They are outscoring everyone in mlb except the Yankees and Red Sox. I understand the inconsistency. But, they just aren't gonna score 5 runs every single game. I also understad the 3 or less issue. But one reason that is such a huge issue is that the pitching staff is not stellar. i always subscribe to pitching, pitching, pitching.

The staff isn't supposed to be stellar. It isn't the Phillies. They need above average pitching and they've for the most part had that after Cueto came back. July 2, 201115 yr The umps get them again. Bailey once again gets a bad break and struggles that inning mightily. Two games in a row he's done that.

Cincinnati has scored three or less runs 33 times. The Cardinals and Diamondbacks are at 34 apiece.
